The Ronald & Ann Williams Charitable Foundation concentrates its giving on health-related causes in the Bay Area, providing substantial operational support to safety-net clinic services and targeted support for medical research. Most of its dollars go to a small set of recipients, with repeated multi-grant support to one community clinic and a single significant gift to an academic medical research partner.
A $600,000 grant to Ucsf Foundation for medical research stands out in the Ronald & Ann Williams Charitable Foundat’s recent record, but the larger pattern is a sustained mix of health care access, homelessness services, and targeted research support. The foundation’s biggest recurring relationship is with Samaritan House in Sunnyvale, which received multiple awards for nonprofit clinic operations across 2023, 2024, and 2025. That same multi-year pattern appears in other Bay Area safety-net providers, including Community Services Agency, Ecumenical Hunger Program, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Family Supportive Housing. The foundation also backs specialized medical research, including support for multiple myeloma research and drug development through the Multiple Myloma Research Foundation, and it has funded nursing scholarships at Ucsf School of Nursing. A separate grant to Avenidas points to interest in senior care, while a scholarship award to Build shows support for student entrepreneurs. Overall, the grant record shows a funder that combines direct-service community aid with health-related institutional support, usually through substantial grants rather than small awards.
Health access is a central theme. The foundation gave $350,000 in 2025 to Samaritan House for nonprofit clinic operations, and repeated similar awards in 2024 and 2023, indicating ongoing support for safety-net care. Homelessness-related work is another clear area: Ecumenical Hunger Program received $300,000 in 2025 for general support for homeless services, while Family Supportive Housing received $300,000 in 2025 for assistance for the homeless and hungry. Medical research is also present in the portfolio. The Multiple Myloma Research Foundation received $300,000 in 2025 for myeloma cancer research and drug development. Education-linked health support appears through $300,000 grants to Ucsf School of Nursing for nursing scholarships in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
Typical grants are substantial: the 25th percentile is $75,000, the median is $100,000, and the 75th percentile is $200,000. The recent record also includes repeated $300,000 and $350,000 awards, showing a preference for large commitments to a limited set of recipients rather than broad, smaller distribution. Recurring support is a defining pattern, especially for Samaritan House, Community Services Agency, Ecumenical Hunger Program, Family Supportive Housing, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Ucsf School of Nursing, each appearing across multiple years. The foundation funds individuals as well as organizations, and it does not make program-related investments. Its grantmaking is local.

Highly concentrated, small portfolio: a few large grants totaling nearly $2M, heavy repeat funding to one core grantee (Samaritan House) plus a single significant institutional grant to UCSF; emphasis on program/operations rather than many small gifts.
Notable grantees: Samaritan House, UCSF Foundation, Other Bay Area community health clinics (representing similar safety-net funding priorities)
Grantmaking is overwhelmingly concentrated in California, which accounts for 97% of grants and is also the top state by grant count. Recipient cities cluster in the Bay Area: Sunnyvale, San Francisco, Mountain View, East Palo Alto, San Jose, Redwood City, and Palo Alto. Outside California, the recent grants list includes Norwalk, Connecticut for medical research support. The recipient-country distribution is entirely domestic, with all listed grants going to U.S. recipients.
The recent record centers on health access, homelessness services, and medical research. Examples include nonprofit clinic operations at Samaritan House, homeless-services support at Ecumenical Hunger Program and Family Supportive Housing, and research funding through the Multiple Myloma Research Foundation and Ucsf Foundation.
Yes. Several recipients appear in multiple years, including Samaritan House in 2023, 2024, and 2025; Community Services Agency in 2023, 2024, and 2025; and Ucsf School of Nursing in 2023, 2024, and 2025. That points to repeated support rather than one-time giving.
The grant-size distribution is sizable: p25 is $75,000, the median is $100,000, and p75 is $200,000. The recent grants list also includes many awards at $300,000 and $350,000, which shows a strong tilt toward large grants.
California receives 97% of the foundation’s grants, and the recipient cities in the record are mostly Bay Area locations such as Sunnyvale, San Francisco, Mountain View, East Palo Alto, San Jose, Redwood City, and Palo Alto.
