Grow human wholeness by fostering stronger relationships between people and nature.
Quimby Family Foundation’s grantmaking is built around two linked ideas: movement and nourishment. Across recent grants, the foundation has backed Maine organizations that help people experience nearby nature and wilderness, and others that support regional, plant-based food choices tied to human and environmental health. The pattern is broad enough to include community food work, outdoor access, and capacity support, but still local in geography and intent. Large awards have gone to Maine Gear Share in Brunswick for both sponsorship and the 657 Old Portland Road acquisition, showing that the foundation will support property-related needs as well as program activity. In food systems work, Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Assoc in Unity received a Nourishment grant and an earlier emergency grant, indicating use of both planned and responsive funding. Other recipients point to the same mix of community food, land-based, and movement-oriented work, including Cultivating Community in Portland, Inland Woods & Trails in Bethel, and the Wabanaki Cultural Preservation Coalition in Old Town. The foundation also makes program-related investments and funds individuals.
One clear thread is community food access and regional food systems. The foundation gave $25,000 to Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Assoc in Unity for a 2023 Nourishment Grant, and $20,000 to Cultivating Community in Portland for a 2024 Nourishment Grant. A second thread is movement and outdoor connection. Inland Woods & Trails in Bethel received $25,000 for a 2024 Movement Grant, while the Wabanaki Cultural Preservation Coalition in Old Town received $20,000 for a 2024 Movement Grant. The foundation also supports food infrastructure and land-based community use. Maine Gear Share in Brunswick received $38,492 for the 657 Old Portland Road acquisition, and Land in Common Inc in Greene received $20,000 for a Nourishment Grant. Capacity-building appears as a separate lane through BOOST, which is available to Quimby Family Foundation grantees at the foundation’s discretion.
Typical grants cluster tightly: the 25th percentile is $10,000, the median is $12,000, and the 75th percentile is $15,000. The recent list also shows repeated $20,000 awards, along with occasional larger commitments for property acquisition and sponsorship. This is a recurring-grantee funder. Maine Gear Share appears in 2023, 2024, and 2025; Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Assoc appears in both 2023 and 2024; Hearty Roots and Women for Healthy Rural Living also recur across multiple years. Grantmaking is through named opportunities and a discretionary BOOST program for existing grantees. The foundation is a regular funder, funds individuals, and makes program-related investments.

Grantmaking is overwhelmingly Maine-focused: 90% of grants go to recipients in the foundation’s HQ state, and Maine is also the top state by grant count. Recent grantees are spread across the state, including Brunswick, Portland, Unity, Bethel, Old Town, Lewiston, Greene, and Milbridge. A small number of grants reached outside Maine, including New Learning Journey Inc in Fayston, Vermont. All recorded recipient-country locations are in the United States.
The foundation centers grantmaking on Movement and Nourishment, with additional support for Human Wholeness and BOOST communications capacity-building. Recent grants show those priorities translated into nearby nature access, regional and plant-based food work, and organizational communications support for existing grantees.
The typical award is modest and concentrated: the 25th percentile is $10,000, the median is $12,000, and the 75th percentile is $15,000. Recent grants also include $20,000 awards and larger amounts tied to sponsorship or property acquisition.
