The Oscar T and Olivann Hokold Foundation concentrates its giving locally in the Tacoma/Lakewood area with a strong emphasis on capital and institutional support for vulnerable children and basic needs. Its largest, repeat investments fund a new pediatric hospital, while smaller but significant gifts support regional food security and youth services. Overall the foundation favors tangible, facility-focused projects and operational support for community safety-net organizations.
Three $1 million grants to Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation set the tone for the Oscar T and Olivann Hokold Foundation’s recent giving: the foundation has backed both the new Mary Bridge Hospital project in 2023 and 2024, then shifted to general operations in 2025. That pattern shows a funder willing to support a major pediatric health institution across both capital needs and ongoing operations. The same local approach appears in its support for community infrastructure and safety-net organizations. The foundation has made repeated gifts to The Coffee Oasis for a building campaign and later general operations, while also funding Tacoma-area organizations such as Boys and Girls Clubs, Tacoma Community House, Rescue Mission, United Way, Hope Sparks, and South Sound Care Foundation. Larger gifts are paired with steady operating support, suggesting a practical emphasis on institutions that serve children, families, and residents facing urgent needs. Its recent grants also include food security and cancer-related support, alongside some cultural and arts funding. Across the grant list, the foundation’s work is tightly centered on Pierce County and nearby communities, with grantmaking that repeatedly supports facilities, core programs, and organizational stability rather than one-off projects alone.
Pediatric health is the clearest thread in the foundation’s recent giving. Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation received $1,000,000 in 2023 and again in 2024 for the new Mary Bridge Hospital, followed by $1,000,000 in 2025 for general operations. That mix of capital and operating support is a defining feature of the funder’s approach. Food security is another consistent area. Emergency Food Network received $450,000 in 2023 for general operations, plus $150,000 in both 2024 and 2025. Nourish Pierce County also appears in the recent list with a $75,000 grant in 2024 for general operations. The foundation also supports youth and homelessness services. The Coffee Oasis received $250,000 in 2023 and 2025 for a building campaign and general operations, plus $251,200 in 2024 for the building campaign. Tacoma Community House, Rescue Mission, and Hope Sparks also received operating support.
