About Oscar J Tolmas Charitable Trust

Their giving favors operational or general support to established service providers addressing homelessness, housing stability, and broad social-service needs. About Oscar J Tolmas Charitable Trust

Oscar J Tolmas Charitable Trust makes large unrestricted grants to local tax-exempt organizations serving New Orleans and the surrounding metro area. Its recent awards show repeated support for the same regional nonprofits over multiple years, including Bridge House Corporation, Volunteers of America Southeast La, and Community Sailing New Orleans Inc. The trust’s giving is aimed at mission support rather than individuals, with grants used to assist an organization’s tax-exempt mission. The trust also funds institutions tied to Jewish community life, education, healthcare-related work, and direct client services. Recent grants include support for Beth Israel and Jewish Children’s Regional Service in Metairie, along with awards to St Michael Special School and the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. The pattern points to a funder that backs established organizations already rooted in Southeast Louisiana, rather than one making broad, dispersed grants. Across the recent grant list, the trust appears to favor substantial awards and repeat relationships with recipients that deliver housing, shelter, community services, and other direct support in the local region.

What Oscar J Tolmas Charitable Trust Funds

Housing and homelessness services are a major theme in the trust’s giving. It awarded $337,500 to Bridge House Corporation in 2025, following $175,000 in 2023 and $160,000 in 2024 to the same organization. Volunteers of America Southeast La also received support in 2023, 2024, and 2025, including $322,000, $200,000, and $175,000. The trust also backs Jewish community organizations and related services. Recent grants include $104,122 to Beth Israel in 2025, $102,700 to Jewish Children’s Regional Service in 2025, and $90,000 to Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans in 2023. Education and special-needs support appear as additional priorities. St Michael Special School received $100,000 in 2024 and $80,000 in 2025, while Junior Achievement of Gno Inc received $75,000 in 2025.

How Oscar J Tolmas Charitable Trust Gives

Typical grant sizes cluster at $10,000 at the 25th percentile, $25,000 at the median, and $50,000 at the 75th percentile, but the recent list also includes much larger awards in the six-figure range. The trust repeatedly funds the same organizations across multiple years, which suggests ongoing relationships rather than one-time gifts. It makes unrestricted charitable grants through its general grantmaking program and does not accept unsolicited requests. The trust does not fund individuals.
