Supports education, healthcare, music and the arts, and environmental stewardship in Maine, Massachusetts, and beyond by funding project-based grants that address specific needs within those focus areas.
A defining feature of Mattina R Proctor Foundation is its repeated support for music and opera organizations through project-based grants, including multiple awards to Foundation for Modern Opera and Boston Lyric Opera for specific productions and artistic work. The foundation also backs education, healthcare, and environmental stewardship, but its recent giving shows a strong pattern of underwriting concrete projects rather than open-ended support. Recent grants include funding for a Ulysses Quartet artist-in-residence project at WGBH, a Shakespeare concert at Foundation for Modern Opera, and a capital campaign at Northern Light Mercy Hospital. The grant sizes in these examples range from smaller project awards to $50,000 commitments, which suggests a flexible approach across performing arts, health infrastructure, and conservation. Its support reaches cultural institutions, hospitals, and schools, with a particular concentration in Maine and Massachusetts and occasional grants beyond those states. Several grants also point to specialized interests, such as recordings, film production, and artist residencies, alongside work in public health and land conservation.
In the arts, the foundation has funded both performance and production. It gave $50,000 to WGBH for the Ulysses Quartet in Residence 2024-20, and $32,500 to Foundation for Modern Opera-marsh C for Sonnet 4 film production. It also supported Parma Music Festival for music recording, showing interest in recorded as well as live music. Healthcare grants include $30,000 to Northern Light Mercy Hospital for a diabetic retinopathy RetinaVue scope and $25,000 for Mercy Fore River II capital campaign work. In education, the foundation gave $20,000 to Maine Media College for campus darkroom facilities, and it has supported New England Conservatory through discretionary and annual-fund grants. Environmental stewardship appears in its support for University of New England’s recirculating aquaculture system, linking conservation and applied research.
Typical grants are modest to mid-sized: the 25th percentile is $3,000, the median is $6,000, and the 75th percentile is $15,000. Recent awards range from project-level gifts of $20,000 to larger commitments of $75,000, but the center of the distribution sits well below those larger figures. The foundation’s recent grants also show repeat support to the same organizations across multiple years, including WGBH, New England Conservatory, Northern Light Mercy Hospital, Farnsworth Art Museum, Foundation for Modern Opera, and Parma Music Festival. The foundation accepts unsolicited proposals through its general grantmaking programs and describes its routine support as single-year, project-based giving, with multi-year grants only occasionally.
