The Marion Boulton Kippy Stroud Foundation concentrates its philanthropy on contemporary visual arts and cultural institutions, primarily in Philadelphia, with large, multi-year general support grants. The foundation favors deep relationships with a small number of arts organizations—funding museum operations and artist residency programs rather than a broad array of causes. While most funding is local, it also supports a notable residency program outside Philadelphia, indicating an interest in artist development as well as institutional sustainability.
Highly concentrated giving: few, large grants with repeated multi-year support to the same organizations rather than many small or one-off awards; primarily local (Philadelphia) but with selective out-of-region program support.
The Marion Boulton Kippy Stroud Foundation’s recent giving is anchored by very large, repeated general-purpose grants to The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia, including awards of $1,586,937 in 2023, $1,420,629 in 2024, and $1,797,961 in 2025. That pattern points to a funder that supports contemporary visual arts institutions with sustained, multi-year commitments rather than one-time project gifts. Philadelphia institutions appear prominently across the grant record, especially museum operating support for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which received $1,000,000 in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The foundation also backs artist development beyond Philadelphia through support for an artist-in-residence program at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. Smaller grants in the recent record extend to Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in New York and El Museo Del Barrio, showing that the foundation’s arts support includes both institutional sustainability and artist-centered programming. Its grantmaking favors sizable awards and long-term relationships with a limited set of arts organizations.
A defining area of support is museum operations for contemporary art institutions. The foundation gave $1,797,961 in 2025, $1,586,937 in 2023, and $1,420,629 in 2024 to The Fabric Workshop and Museum for general purpose support. It also provided $1,000,000 in each of 2023, 2024, and 2025 to the Philadelphia Museum of Art for general purpose use. Artist development is another visible theme: College of the Atlantic received $1,026,000 in 2023 for its 2022 Artist in Residence Program, and $48,000 in 2025 for College of the Atlantic Kamp Kippy. The foundation also supported Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture with $125,000 in 2023 for a 75th Anniversary Campaign.
Grant sizes are highly concentrated at the top end: the 25th percentile is $46,250, the median is $562,500, and the 75th percentile is $1,019,500. The record shows repeated grants to the same recipients across multiple years, especially The Fabric Workshop and Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, and College of the Atlantic. That indicates ongoing relationships rather than isolated awards. The foundation is not a funder of individuals and does not make program-related investments. The grants listed are all institutional awards, often framed as general purpose support.
