The Marguerite Delany Hark Foundation makes a small number of very large, unrestricted grants across health, housing, childcare and regional cultural institutions. Grants are targeted and flexible—frequently given as general operating support—suggesting a preference for organizations that provide core community services (medical research, affordable/supportive housing, early childhood care, and cultural programming). The foundation’s giving appears place-agnostic in registration but focused on established institutions that deliver measurable community impact.
Concentrated, high-dollar grants to a very small number of recipients; primarily unrestricted/general operating support rather than project-specific funding.
A defining feature of the Marguerite Delany Hark Foundation is its willingness to make large, unrestricted grants across a narrow set of established institutions. In 2025, it awarded $500,000 to Fellowship Housing in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, and another $500,000 to Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation in Rosemont, Illinois, both as unrestricted general fund support. That same year it also gave $333,333 to Eagle River Valley Childcare in Avon, Colorado, again without restrictions. The pattern points to a funder that backs core operations rather than project-specific work. Its recent grant record includes health, housing, childcare, and community-serving organizations. In Colorado, the foundation has supported Vail Health Foundation, Habitat for Humanity Vail Valley, Roundup River Ranch, and Vail Veterans Program. In Illinois, it has backed Fellowship Housing, Home, Night Ministry, Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago, Deborah's Place, and Center for Independent Futures. The grants are often sizable enough to matter to institutional budgets, yet the foundation keeps the funding flexible, suggesting a preference for organizations with ongoing service delivery and established capacity. Across the recent list, the same recipients appear more than once, reinforcing a multi-year relationship pattern rather than one-off grantmaking.
Health and medical research are a clear part of the foundation’s portfolio. It gave $500,000 to Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation in Rosemont, Illinois, and $300,000 to Vail Health Foundation in Edwards, Colorado, both as unrestricted general fund support. Housing is another major thread. The foundation awarded $300,000 to Habitat for Humanity Vail Valley in Avon, Colorado, and $135,000 to Home in Chicago, Illinois. Earlier grants also went to Fellowship Housing in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, and Habitat for Humanity in Americus, Georgia. Childcare and family services appear as well. In 2025, it gave $333,333 to Eagle River Valley Childcare in Avon, Colorado. Community and human services are reflected in grants to Night Ministry in Chicago and Center for Independent Futures in Evanston, Illinois.
Typical grant size is $30,000 at the 25th percentile, $35,000 at the median, and $70,834 at the 75th percentile, even though the recent list includes several six-figure awards. The foundation makes unrestricted general fund grants, which indicates flexible support rather than tightly designated project funding. Recipients appear across multiple years, including Vail Valley Foundation, Fellowship Housing, Roundup River Ranch, Vail Health Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, The Nature Conservancy, and Vail Veterans Program. It is a regular funder and does not fund individuals or make program-related investments.
