The Margaret A Darrin Charitable Trust makes a small number of sizable, mission-driven grants primarily in New Jersey (with at least one conservation gift outside the state). Its giving concentrates on direct-service organizations that address basic needs and vulnerable populations — food security, housing/homelessness, child advocacy, behavioral health and disability services — and it appears comfortable making large, unrestricted or broadly purposed gifts to well-established local nonprofits.
Margaret a Darrin Charitable Trust C/o Michael T Hanifin makes a small number of large grants, with multiple awards at $500,000 or more and a $1,000,000 grant in the recent record. The pattern points to support for established nonprofits rather than many small awards. In the latest grants, NourishNJ received $1,000,000 to further advance the organization’s charitable purpose, and CASA of Morris & Essex Counties received $850,000 for the same purpose. Those grants sit alongside major support for Little Hill Foundation, Eva’s Village, Habitat for Humanity (Morris), and the Seeing Eye, showing a recurring interest in direct-service organizations serving basic needs, health-related support, and people with disabilities. The trust’s recent giving also includes conservation and scholarship support. Lake George Land Conservancy received repeated seven-figure support across 2023 and 2024, while Tri-county Scholarship Fund appears in consecutive years as well. Across the record, the trust uses broad-purpose language rather than tightly restricted project descriptions, which suggests flexibility in how recipients use the funds. Its grantmaking is regional, but the recipient list extends beyond New Jersey to a small number of organizations in New York and Wyoming.
Basic needs are a major theme in the trust’s grantmaking. NourishNJ received $1,000,000 to further advance its charitable purpose, and Interfaith Food Pantry received $250,000 under the same purpose language. Housing and homelessness also appear repeatedly: Eva’s Village received $625,000 in 2024 and $500,000 in 2023, while Habitat for Humanity (Morris) received $550,000 in 2024 and $500,000 in 2023. The trust also supports organizations serving children and youth. CASA of Morris & Essex Counties received $850,000, and Tri-county Scholarship Fund received $500,000 in 2023 and $475,000 in 2024. Health and recovery needs show up in awards to Little Hill Foundation, which received $750,000, and Crossroads4hope, which received $350,000. Conservation is another visible thread through Lake George Land Conservancy and Lake George Association.
Typical grant sizes are substantial: the 25th percentile is $7,500, the median is $10,000, and the 75th percentile is $150,000. The recent record also includes many far larger awards, indicating a split between smaller and very large grants. The trust appears to favor recurring relationships; several recipients show up in multiple years, including Lake George Land Conservancy, Eva’s Village, Habitat for Humanity (Morris), Morristown Medical Center Foundation, Tri-county Scholarship Fund, and Summit Speech School. Grants are made through the trust itself, and the purposes are usually broad charitable-purpose awards rather than tightly specified project grants.
