The LeRoy Thom Jean Thom and T-L Foundation concentrates its philanthropy on youth development and community recreation in Hastings, Nebraska, primarily through large gifts to YMCA organizations. Nearly all giving supports youth programming and local community services delivered by the YMCA, signaling a strong local and programmatic focus rather than broad geographic or issue diversification.
A defining pattern in LeRoy Thom Jean Thom and T-L Foundation grantmaking is its repeated support for youth programming through Hastings-area YMCA organizations, including two $500,000 grants to YMCA in 2024 and a $500,000 grant to Hastings Family YMCA in 2023. That emphasis sits alongside substantial support for private education, churches, and counseling services, showing a portfolio built around local institutions and affiliated service providers rather than a broad mix of unrelated causes. In Hastings, the foundation has backed both recreation and youth development, while also funding schools such as Zion Classical Academy and Hastings Christian School. Its recent giving also reaches beyond Nebraska to organizations tied to education, humanitarian work, and faith-based services in other states. The largest grants in the record are paired with smaller operating-style awards across community and religious nonprofits, and the foundation’s recent history includes repeat support for several organizations over multiple years. The result is a grantmaker with a clear pattern: concentrated support for youth, education, church life, and direct-service groups, with Hastings as the center of activity and recurring awards to familiar recipients.
Youth development is the most visible theme in the recent record. The foundation gave $500,000 to YMCA in Hastings, NE in 2024 for youth support, and another $90,000 to Hastings Family YMCA in 2023 for youth health. Education is another major thread: it awarded $345,000 to Zion Classical Academy in 2023 for private education, and $283,000 to Concordia University Foundation in 2024 for private college support. Faith-based giving also appears prominently, including $261,000 to Grace Life Church in 2023 for church support and $75,000 to Mt Calvary MB in Houston, TX in 2024 for church support. Direct-service grants extend to human services as well, such as $114,000 to Crossroads Center in Hastings for abuse recovery and $78,000 to Catholic Social Services of Nebraska for poverty relief.
Typical grant sizes cluster in the low five figures, with p25 at $5,000, median at $13,000, and p75 at $33,000. The recent record also includes many larger awards, indicating a mix of routine smaller grants and periodic six-figure commitments. Several recipients appear in multiple years, including YMCA/Hastings Family YMCA, Zion Classical Academy, Concordia University Foundation, Grace Life Church, Wellspring Pregnancy & Health Care, Catholic Social Services of Nebraska, Kings Gate Ranch, and One Life Church Bay Area. The foundation is a regular funder rather than a donor-advised fund, and it does not fund individuals or make program-related investments.
