The L Roy Papp Charitable Trust is a Phoenix-focused funder that concentrates support on local higher education scholarships, healthcare institutions, and arts & cultural organizations. Grants skew toward place-based capital and program support—frequently to repeat grantees—while also touching social services and medical research in the region. Their giving is distinctive for sizable awards to ASU scholarship programs and significant backing of flagship Phoenix cultural institutions.
L Roy Papp Charitable Trust stands out for its repeated support of Arizona State University scholarship programs, including grants of $40,000 in 2023, $35,000 in 2024, and $40,000 again in 2025. That pattern places higher education access at the center of its recent giving. The trust also backs major Phoenix institutions across healthcare and the arts, pairing scholarship support with general operating, event, and capital-oriented gifts. Recent grants show a clear preference for established local organizations. Honor Health Foundation received $50,500 for general support in 2023, followed by $50,000 to Honor Health for greatest needs in 2025. In the cultural sector, Phoenix Art Museum received multiple awards, including $15,000 for board dues and $10,000 for general support, while the Heard Museum received $12,500 for Moondance 2022 and $5,000 for the Grand Gallery Exhibition Fund. The trust also supports Phoenix-area public gardens, animal programming, disability research, and social services, making its portfolio broad within a local Arizona footprint.
Higher education is a consistent priority. The trust gave $22,500 to Asu Foundation for IHO and $5,400 for general support, alongside a $2,500 award for the Univ Presidents Investment Fund. It also funded a separate $40,000 scholarship program grant to Asu Foundation in 2025. Health and social service organizations are also in the mix. St Vincent Depaul received $10,000 for general support, and Justa Center received $5,000 for a general contribution. In arts and cultural giving, Phoenix Art Museum received support tied to board dues, a 21st Century Society appreciation grant, and library discretionary funding. The Heard Museum also received support for the Grand Gallery Exhibition Fund, showing attention to exhibitions and museum programming. The trust extends beyond the museum sector to environmental and animal-focused work as well, with grants to Phoenix Zoo for Big Cats of Arizona and general support, plus awards to Desert Botanical Garden for general support and the Hazel Hare Center.
Typical grants cluster around a modest-to-midrange level: the 25th percentile is $1,000, the median is $5,000, and the 75th percentile is $8,901. The trust’s recent giving includes both smaller support grants and larger awards in the $35,000 to $50,500 range. Repeat grantees appear frequently across multiple years, especially in higher education and healthcare. It operates as a charitable trust rather than a DAF or operating foundation, and it also funds individuals.
