The Josephine and Louise Crane Foundation concentrates on place-based investments in Massachusetts—especially the Berkshires and Cape Cod—supporting community health, youth services, education/training, civic organizing, and conservation. Grants are often repeated to the same organizations and sized to sustain operating and program support rather than short-term projects, indicating long-term partnership with regional nonprofits and a mix of civic- and service-oriented grantees. The foundation also funds selective national/environmental research and advocacy groups that align with its conservation and democratic engagement interests.
Among recent grants, Josephine and Louise Crane Foundation C/o Cameron K Mackey stands out for repeated unrestricted support to regional institutions that anchor daily life in Massachusetts communities. Berkshire United Way in Pittsfield received $300,000 in 2023 and $215,000 in 2025, while Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation in Falmouth received $185,000 in 2023 and $210,000 in 2025. Those recurring awards point to a funder that builds long-term relationships rather than making one-off project grants. The foundation’s giving also shows a clear link between civic life, community health, and education. Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay received $200,000 in both 2023 and 2025, and Boys and Girls Club of the Berkshires in Pittsfield received $175,000 in 2023 and $125,000 in 2025. The recent grants list includes support for community health centers, youth-serving organizations, economic democracy groups, and conservation-related nonprofits, all on an unrestricted basis. That pattern fits a place-based funder that supports core operations across the Berkshires, Cape Cod, and nearby Massachusetts communities.
Community health is a clear theme in the recent grants. Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation in Falmouth received $210,000 in 2025, and Community Health Center of Cape Cod in Mashpee received $90,000 in 2025 after a $100,000 award in 2023. Those grants sit alongside support for regional health infrastructure rather than short-term project work. Youth development and education appear through several named grantees. Boys and Girls Club of the Berkshires in Pittsfield received $125,000 in 2025, and Smart From the Start in Roxbury received $100,000 in 2025 after a $100,000 grant in 2023. Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay also received $200,000 in 2025 for higher education tied to workforce pathways. The foundation also funds civic and economic justice work. The Center for Economic Democracy in Boston received $100,000 in 2025, and Community Labor United in Boston received $90,000 in 2023. Conservation appears through The 300 Committee Land Trust in Falmouth, which received $82,500 in 2025.
The typical grant size is $15,000 at the 25th percentile, $25,000 at the median, and $50,000 at the 75th percentile, but the recent grants list also shows much larger awards for anchor organizations. The foundation operates as a regular funder and the awards are marked unrestricted, indicating flexible support rather than restricted project-only funding. Repeated grants to the same recipients appear across multiple years, including Berkshire United Way, Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, and Boys and Girls Club of the Berkshires. That pattern suggests ongoing relationships with a relatively stable group of nonprofits. The foundation funds individuals: False, and it makes no program-related investments.
