The foundation concentrates its giving on eldercare and residential services—primarily supporting a Jewish-affiliated senior living community in the Washington, DC area—while making occasional, modest gifts to cultural and higher-education causes. Most dollars flow to a small number of repeat grantees, indicating a focused, relationship-driven approach rather than broad charitable diversification.
Highly concentrated giving: a large majority of funds go to a single repeat grantee (three grants totaling ~82% of dollars), with a few modest one-off gifts to national cultural and educational institutions. Grants are relatively few and targeted rather than widely distributed.
A single senior living community accounts for the foundation’s largest recent gifts: Charles E Smith Life Communities received $31,000 in 2024, $25,000 in 2025, and $20,000 in 2023, all unrestricted. That repeat pattern points to a funder with a narrow, relationship-based approach centered on eldercare and residential services, rather than broad thematic spread. The Jonathan S & Patricia G England Foundation also makes smaller unrestricted grants to a mix of education, cultural, and community organizations, including the Library of Congress, University of San Francisco Foundation, and Women in Distress of Broward County Inc. Across the latest grants, its giving stays modest in size and largely supports operating needs. The portfolio includes both national institutions and local service providers, with most awards concentrated among a small set of recurring recipients. In addition to its core support for senior living, the foundation’s recent record shows occasional gifts to higher education and human services, alongside a few grants in health-related and animal welfare categories.
Eldercare and residential services are the clearest thread in the foundation’s recent giving. Charles E Smith Life Communities received $31,000 in 2024, $25,000 in 2025, and $20,000 in 2023, each as unrestricted support. In higher education, the foundation backed the University of San Francisco Foundation with $6,000 in 2024, $6,000 in 2025, and $4,500 in 2025, plus a $2,500 grant in 2023. It also supported University of California Hastings College of Law with $5,000 in 2023, $5,000 in 2024, and $1,000 in 2025, again unrestricted. Human services appear as well: Women in Distress of Broward County Inc received $4,250 in 2023, $4,000 in 2024, and $4,000 in 2025. The portfolio extends to cultural and public-interest institutions, including the Library of Congress.
Typical grants are small: the p25 is $3,750, the median is $4,250, and the p75 is $7,250. The grant list shows repeated support across multiple years for several recipients, which suggests ongoing relationships rather than one-time awards. Grants are unrestricted, and the foundation does not fund individuals or make program-related investments. Its latest 990 year on file is 2025, and the annual grants total is $156,000, which aligns with a modest, selective pattern of giving.
