The John Hauck Foundation makes a small number of mid-to-large gifts focused on institutional support for health care, higher education, research, and regional history. Grants appear targeted to established organizations — hospitals, universities, and state historical institutions — and support capital campaigns and discrete program or research projects. The foundation favors tangible, institutional investments rather than many small community grants.
Concentrated: a few large (~$85k–$100k) grants per cycle to established institutions, split between education/research and arts/history; limited number of recipients rather than broad, small-dollar distribution.
The John Hauck Foundation Fifth Third Bank Na makes institutional grants that often land in the $50,000 to $100,000 range, with repeated support for Cincinnati health care, higher education, and cultural preservation. Its recent awards show a preference for established organizations and for projects with a defined purpose, including capital campaigns, program support, and annual fund support. The foundation’s largest recent gifts include $100,000 to Midway University Inc for a capital campaign and $100,000 to University of Florida Research Foundation Inc for project/program support, alongside $100,000 to Childrens Hospital Medical Center Cincinnati for project/program support. In Cincinnati, the foundation has also supported Xavier University, Cincinnati Preservation Association, The Seven Hills Schools, and Cincinnati Museum Center, suggesting a steady emphasis on schools, museums, and preservation work. Beyond those areas, it has backed research foundations and select regional institutions, including grants to universities in Florida and Kentucky.
Higher education is a major thread in the foundation’s giving. It awarded $100,000 to Midway University Inc for a capital campaign and supported Xavier University with $76,317 and $66,242 in 2025, plus $61,600 in both 2023 and 2024, all for project/program support. The foundation also funded Rollins College multiple times, including $50,000 grants in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Health care is another clear priority. Childrens Hospital Medical Center Cincinnati received $100,000 in 2024 and $50,000 in 2023 and 2025 for project/program support. The pattern points to repeat support for the same hospital system rather than one-time gifts. The foundation also backs history and preservation. It gave $85,000 to Ohio Historical Society History Connection in 2023 and $50,000 in 2024, and it supported Cincinnati Preservation Association with several $75,000 grants from 2023 through 2025.
Typical grants cluster in the mid-five-figure range: p25 is $18,750, median is $25,000, and p75 is $50,000. Recent giving also includes repeated $75,000 and $100,000 awards, so the foundation can make larger institutional gifts when it chooses. The pattern is not one-and-done; several recipients appear across multiple years, including Xavier University, Cincinnati Preservation Association, Rollins College, and Childrens Hospital Medical Center. The foundation is a grantmaker, not a program-related investor, and it also funds individuals. Its recent grants use project/program support, capital campaigns, general operating support, scholarship funding, and annual fund support.
