The JMM Charitable Foundation makes a small number of very large grants concentrating on health care institutions, higher education, and Asian/Asian-American community advancement. Its giving favors major hospitals and medical programs as well as prominent universities and organizations that support Asian-American visibility and leadership. Grants are few but sizable, often directed to established institutions rather than grassroots groups.
Jmm Charitable Foundation Inc’s largest recent grant was $2,970,000 to Charles B Wang Community Health Center for general support, which captures a broader pattern in its giving: large checks to established institutions working in health care, higher education, and Asian-American community advancement. In 2025, the foundation also made a $2,500,000 grant to Columbia University to support education and a $1,500,000 grant to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for its Department of Emergency Medicine. Those awards sit alongside support for organizations tied to Asian-American visibility and leadership, including Gold House Foundation, and medical programs connected to UCLA. The foundation’s grantmaking appears institution-oriented rather than broad-based, with recipients ranging from community health providers to major universities, hospitals, and cultural or educational organizations. The recent record shows a philanthropic profile centered on medical care access, clinical and academic institutions, and community advancement for Asian-American populations.
Health care institutions are a major theme. Jmm Charitable Foundation Inc gave $2,970,000 to Charles B Wang Community Health Center for general support and $1,500,000 to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for the Department of Emergency Medicine. It also supported City of Hope with $42,000 in general support, adding another medical-institution grant to the 2025 record. Higher education is another clear area: Columbia University received $2,500,000 to support education, and Harvard Westlake received $25,000 in general support. The foundation also funded research tied to mental health and diagnostics through a $200,000 grant to the UCLA Foundation for depression diagnostic research. Asian-American visibility and cultural advancement appears through a $1,100,000 grant to Gold House Foundation and a $30,000 grant to The China Institute.
The recent grants show a very uneven size distribution, with a few very large awards and many much smaller ones. The foundation is a private foundation with $320,626,328 in assets and $9,336,600 in annual grants given. Its 2025 record includes both multimillion-dollar grants and smaller awards below $50,000, indicating a mix of major institutional commitments and limited supplementary support. The grants list also shows multiple awards to UCLA-related recipients in the same year, which suggests repeat support within an institutional network. All 17 recent grants went to U.S. recipients, and the foundation’s giving pattern is concentrated in established organizations rather than dispersed across many small grantees.

Highly concentrated giving: a handful of very large, one-off grants to established institutions across health, education, and Asian-American advocacy rather than many small or grassroots awards.
Notable grantees: Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, Cedars‑Sinai Medical Center, Columbia University, Gold House Foundation
All 17 recent grants went to U.S. recipients. New York, NY appears repeatedly in the grant record through Charles B Wang Community Health Center, Columbia University, and The China Institute. Los Angeles, CA is another recurring recipient location, with grants to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, UCLA-related entities, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, and the UCLA medical hospitality programs. Other recipient locations include Covina, CA; Duarte, CA; and Scottsdale, AZ, showing that the foundation’s giving reaches beyond its headquarters city.
Its recent grants go mainly to health care institutions, higher education, and organizations tied to Asian-American advancement. Examples in the 2025 record include a community health center, a university, a medical center department, and a cultural/leadership foundation.
The foundation’s recent giving is highly skewed toward a few large awards. The largest recent grant was $2,970,000, followed by $2,500,000 and $1,500,000; smaller grants in the same year ranged down to $8,700.
Yes. Recent grants include $1,500,000 to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for the Department of Emergency Medicine and $200,000 to the UCLA Foundation for depression diagnostic research. It also made several UCLA medical hospitality program grants in 2025.
California appears often in the recipient list, including Los Angeles, Covina, Duarte, and Scottsdale-area giving in the recent record, but the broader recipient distribution is wider than California alone. New York, NY also appears multiple times among recent grantees.
The recent list shows repeated support within the UCLA network in 2025, including separate grants to the UCLA Foundation and multiple UC Regents medical hospitality programs. That points to more than a single one-off relationship in at least some parts of its giving.
