The James Daniel Humphrey Foundation (Wells Fargo) concentrates on general operating support for religious congregations, independent K–12 and higher education institutions, and local social service and youth organizations, often in the Twin Cities / Midwest but also to selective national colleges. Grants are typically unrestricted, repeated across the same organizations, and sized as rounded multi-thousand-dollar commitments. The foundation favors established, mission-driven institutions (churches, presbyterian-affiliated entities, private schools, and community service organizations) over project-specific funding.
James Daniel Humphrey Foundation Wells Fargo gives through a steady pattern of unrestricted support to established institutions, with recurring $80,000 grants appearing across religious congregations, private schools, colleges, and social service organizations. The largest recent gift in the file is $120,000 to First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston for general operating support, which fits the foundation’s broader preference for core funding rather than project-specific awards. Across the recent grants list, the foundation supports mainline Protestant churches such as The House of Hope Presbyterian Ch, educational institutions including Carleton College, Princeton University, and Bennington College, and community service organizations such as Greater Twin Cities United Way and the American Red Cross. The grant purposes are consistently listed as general operating, general support, or general operating support, pointing to a program-agnostic approach focused on institutional stability. Recipients also include faith-based residential services and youth-serving organizations, reinforcing a mix of religion, education, and human services in the portfolio. The same organizations appear more than once across the recent records, indicating repeated support rather than one-time gifts.
Religious institutions are a clear part of the portfolio. The foundation gave $120,000 to First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston for general operating support, and it also supported The House of Hope Presbyterian Ch in St. Paul with $80,000 for general operating in both 2024 and 2025. Education is another core area: Carleton College in Northfield received $80,000 for general operating, while St Paul Academy and Summit School in Saint Paul received the same amount for general operating. In higher education, the recent list also includes Bennington College, Princeton University, and Vassar College, each funded through general operating grants. Human services appear through awards such as $80,000 to Greater Twin Cities United Way in Minneapolis and $80,000 to the American Red Cross in Washington DC, both designated for general support or general operating.
Typical grants cluster tightly around one level: the p25 is $40,000, while both the median and p75 are $80,000. In the recent grants list, $80,000 appears repeatedly, with one larger $120,000 award standing apart. The pattern also shows repeat support to the same organizations across multiple years, including several recipients that reappear in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Grants are recorded as general operating, general support, or general operating support, and the foundation does not make program-related investments. It also does not fund individuals. The active program listed is an unnamed general operating support program, and unsolicited applications are not accepted.

Notable grantees: First Church of Christ, Scientist, St. Paul Academy and Summit School, Greater Twin Cities United Way, The Presbyterian Homes, Incorporated
Giving is regional, but the recipient base is still concentrated in the United States, with all recorded grants going to US organizations. Minnesota appears frequently, especially in Saint Paul, Minneapolis, Northfield, and Wayzata, while Indiana is the top state by grant count overall. Outside the Midwest, recent recipients include Boston, Princeton, Bennington, Poughkeepsie, and La Jolla. Missouri recipients also appear in the recent list, including Saint Louis organizations. The recipient distribution shows that the foundation’s grantmaking reaches beyond its headquarters in Saint Louis while still favoring nearby Midwest institutions.
