The Henry C. and Audrienne Murray Foundation primarily funds place-based community endowments and general funds, favoring community foundations in Northern Michigan and similar regional foundations elsewhere. Their grants are largely unrestricted/general fund gifts, suggesting a hands-off approach that strengthens local philanthropic infrastructure rather than program-level interventions. The foundation tends to make repeated, moderate-sized gifts to a small set of community foundations and donor-advised vehicles.
The Henry C and Audrienne Murray Foundation’s giving is built around place-based community foundations and general funds, with repeated support for Northern Michigan institutions and similar regional vehicles in other states. That pattern shows up in the size and frequency of its gifts: a mix of moderate grants and smaller follow-on awards, usually directed to unrestricted or general fund purposes rather than named programs. Recent grants illustrate the approach. Petoskey-harbor Springs Area Community Foundation received $30,000 in 2023 and $18,000 in 2025 for its general fund, while Mackinac Island Community Foundation was funded multiple times across 2023, 2024, and 2025, including $17,990 and $12,000. The foundation also supported Maine Community Foundation with $20,000 in 2023 and $18,000 in 2025, reinforcing that its interests extend beyond Michigan but remain focused on community foundation infrastructure. The result is a portfolio centered on local philanthropic capacity. Rather than underwriting a single service model, the foundation channels money into organizations that aggregate and deploy community resources, especially in places tied to its recurring grant pattern.
A major part of the foundation’s work is support for Northern Michigan community infrastructure. Petoskey-harbor Springs Area Community Foundation received $30,000 for its general fund in 2023, and Mackinac Island Community Foundation received $17,990 in 2024 and $12,000 in 2025, both also as general fund gifts. The foundation also backs community endowments outside Michigan. Maine Community Foundation received $20,000 in 2023 and $18,000 in 2025, while Greater Lowell Community Foundation received $20,000 in 2023 and $15,000 in 2024, each for general fund support. Its broader charitable support includes local organizations beyond community foundations. Pewabic Pottery in Detroit received $8,000 in 2024, and St Anne's Catholic Church on Mackinac Island received $4,000 in 2024 and $3,500 in 2025. These gifts fit the same general-support pattern rather than a narrow programmatic strategy.
Grant sizes cluster in the low-to-mid thousands, with a p25 of $462, a median of $6,500, and a p75 of $15,748. The funder also makes a few larger grants, including $30,000 and several awards at $18,000 or $20,000. The recent record shows repeat support to the same recipients across multiple years, especially community foundations and local funds. The foundation funds individuals: False, and makes program-related investments: False. The pattern points to a responsive grantmaker using general fund support rather than project-specific awards.
