The Greenberg Foundation appears to concentrate its philanthropy on large-scale support for hospital-based health care, demonstrated by a single $2 million grant to NewYork-Presbyterian. The foundation favors high-impact, institutional giving to major medical centers, likely for operating, capital, or program support rather than many small community grants.
Highly concentrated: a single, large grant to an established hospital rather than distributed small grants or many grantees; appears to favor one-time, high-value institutional support.
Greenberg Foundation C/o Irene Fields shows a clear preference for institutional grants tied to exempt-purpose work, led by a $2 million award to NY Presbyterian Hospital in 2023. That single grant sets the scale for the foundation’s giving and points to a pattern of support for large organizations rather than many small community awards. The recent record also includes repeated support for Council on Foreign Relations and Young Audiences, each appearing in multiple years at the $50,000 level, which suggests steady backing for established nonprofits with different missions. Beyond those larger awards, the foundation’s recent grants extend to cultural, educational, and civic organizations, including New York Philharmonic, The Rockefeller University, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Several grants go to New York City institutions, while a few reach groups outside the state, such as Fair Lines America Foundation in Alexandria, Virginia, and Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation in Indianapolis. The pattern is one of selective, mission-based giving across a small set of recipients, with a strong emphasis on organizations that already operate at scale.
Health care is the clearest anchor in the recent record: the foundation gave $2 million to NY Presbyterian Hospital to further the donee’s exempt purposes. That grant points to support for hospital-based work within a major academic medical center. The foundation also funds arts and education organizations. It gave $50,000 to Young Audiences in both 2023 and 2025, and $25,000 to New York Philharmonic in 2025, showing sustained interest in cultural and youth-facing programming. Civic and policy-oriented support appears as well. In 2023, it gave $25,000 to Fair Lines America Foundation and $50,000 to Council on Foreign Relations in both 2023 and 2025. Smaller grants to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Lotos Foundation, and Alumni & Friends of Laguardia H School round out a portfolio that mixes health care, culture, education, and civic institutions.
Typical grants are modest compared with the foundation’s largest award: p25 is $125, median is $5,000, and p75 is $37,500. The distribution is highly skewed by a single $2 million grant, while most other awards sit at or below $50,000. Recipients do repeat across years: Council on Foreign Relations, Young Audiences, and Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation all appear more than once in the recent grants list. The foundation is a private foundation, not a funder of individuals, and it does not make program-related investments. The available data does not indicate an application process.
