The Glenn W. Bailey Charitable Trust makes a small number of very large, targeted grants focused on science, conservation, and public heritage. Grants are predominantly endowments and fellowship support that invest in long-term capacity — especially university research fellowships and field science — as well as conservation stewardship and national park preservation. The Trust funds both local Florida institutions and national conservation/public-lands causes, with an emphasis on education and sustained program support.
A defining pattern of the Glenn W Bailey Charitable Trust is long-term support through endowments and fellowship funding. Its largest recent grant was a $2.5 million endowment to the University of Florida Foundation Scripps Research for the Glenn W. and Cornelia T. Bailey Endowed Graduate Fellowship and Community Education and Outreach Program Endowment, pairing graduate training with public education. The Trust also made a $1 million endowment gift to Busch Wildlife Sanctuary Foundation, showing its use of large, targeted awards to build institutional capacity. Across recent grants, the foundation backs science research, conservation, and public heritage through substantial, purpose-specific commitments. National Park Foundation received multiple major awards tied to repair work at the Lincoln Memorial and to field science and environmental STEM education at Everglades. In Florida, the Trust has supported university-based fellowship programs, marine science, wildlife rehabilitation, and museum recovery. In health research, it has funded pancreatic cancer early detection and clinical accelerator work. The pattern is selective rather than broad, with many awards designed to sustain named programs, fellowships, or endowments over time.
In science education, the Trust funded $425,000 to Frost Museum of Science Philip and Patricia for the Glenn W. Bailey Foundation STEM Challenge connecting high schools in Miami-Dade to science investigations. It also gave $250,000 to Biobus for the Harlem STEM Pathway, extending STEM learning into urban youth programming. In cancer research, the foundation gave $750,000 to Marc Lustgarten Pancreatic Cancer Foundation for the Transforming Early Detection and Interception Campaign and $600,000 for the Robert F. Vizza Lustgarten Clinical Accelerator Initiative. Those grants point to support for both research translation and clinical capacity. In conservation and marine science, the Trust awarded $500,000 to Loggerhead Marinelife Center for a computed tomography machine for the sea turtle hospital, and $250,000 to Everglades Foundation for general operating support. It also made a $320,000 5-year award to Florida Atlantic Universityfoundation for the Glenn W. and Cornelia T. Bailey Marine Sea Scholars Program.

Highly concentrated: very few large grants (multi-hundred-thousand to multi-million) that are often endowed or designated for fellowships and long-term program support. Mix of local (Florida university and regional sanctuary) and national (National Park Foundation) recipients; repeat or multi-year pattern not evident from this single-year snapshot but emphasis is on durable, capacity-building gifts rather than many small grants.
Notable grantees: University of Florida Foundation / Scripps Research (Glenn W. and Cornelia T. Bailey Endowed Graduate Fellowship & outreach), National Park Foundation (Lincoln Memorial repair / park science fellowships), Busch Wildlife Sanctuary Foundation (endowment for wildlife conservation/stewardship)
Typical grant size clusters around $20,000 to $50,000, with a p25 of $20,000, median of $25,000, and p75 of $50,000. The recent-grants file shows a different layer of much larger commitments, including endowments and multi-year program support. Recipients can appear across multiple years, such as the National Park Foundation, University of Florida Foundation Scripps Research, and Marc Lustgarten Pancreatic Cancer Foundation. The Trust is a regular funder, and its active process includes a Letter of Inquiry for projects outside named programs or above the program cap of about $25,000. It also operates program grants in STEM areas, some of which accept unsolicited applications.
The Trust’s giving is regional and lands entirely in the United States. Florida receives 47% of grants by recipient location, and West Palm Beach, Miami, Jupiter, Gainesville, and Boca Raton all appear among recent recipients. Outside Florida, Washington, DC, Woodbury, NY, Atlanta, GA, and New York, NY show up repeatedly in the recent-grants list. The top state by grant count is Connecticut, even though it is not the headquarters state. The pattern includes both in-state Florida institutions and national recipients with U.S. footprints.
Its named and recent grants center on STEM education, biomedical research, environmental and climate work, and entrepreneurship in communities. Recent awards also include field science, conservation stewardship, museum recovery, and long-term fellowship or endowment support.
Typical grant size is relatively small compared with the largest recent awards: p25 is $20,000, the median is $25,000, and p75 is $50,000. The recent-grants list also includes much larger commitments for endowments and multi-year programs.
Yes. Several recipients appear multiple times across the recent-grants list, including the National Park Foundation, University of Florida Foundation Scripps Research, and Marc Lustgarten Pancreatic Cancer Foundation. That pattern suggests repeat support rather than one-time awards only.
For projects outside named program grants or requests above the program cap of about $25,000, the Trust requires a Letter of Inquiry. LOIs are reviewed monthly, and approved applicants are invited to submit a full grant application. Some STEM program grants also accept unsolicited applications.
Its geographic scope is regional, with grants going entirely to U.S. recipients in the data provided. Florida accounts for 47% of grants by recipient location, and other recurring recipient locations include Washington, DC; Woodbury, NY; Atlanta, GA; and New York, NY.
