The Galena-Yorktown Foundation concentrates its giving on a very small number of large, unrestricted awards, primarily supporting a Jewish day school in the Washington, D.C. area and a major national performing arts institution. Its grants are sizable, repeat gifts intended as general operating support rather than project-specific funding, indicating a preference for sustained core support to trusted institutions.
Highly concentrated: few (6) grants totaling ~$4.17M, dominated by repeat, large unrestricted gifts to two core grantees rather than many small or geographically dispersed awards.
A defining feature of Galena-yorktown Foundation’s giving is the size and consistency of its unrestricted support to a few long-standing institutions. Across recent years, the foundation has made seven-figure general operating grants to Yeshiva of Greater Washington, including $1,026,000 in 2025, $990,000 in 2024, and $936,500 in 2023. It also backs The Kennedy Center with similarly large unrestricted awards, such as $466,702 in 2024, $421,772 in 2023, and $331,353 in 2025. That pattern points to a funder that favors core support over project-specific funding. The portfolio extends beyond those anchor grantees, but the same flexibility shows up elsewhere. Galena-yorktown Foundation gives unrestricted funds to Jewish, civic, cultural, and public-interest organizations, including American Friends of the Hebrew University, The Voter Participation Center, and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. It also supports Washington-area institutions such as DC Jazz Festival and Some (so Others Might Eat). The overall picture is a regional funder with a concentrated set of repeat recipients and a clear preference for giving organizations room to use funds where they are most needed.
Jewish education is one of the clearest themes in the foundation’s grantmaking. Yeshiva of Greater Washington received $1,026,000 in 2025 for unrestricted funds, continuing earlier unrestricted awards of $990,000 in 2024 and $936,500 in 2023. Arts and culture is another visible area. The Kennedy Center received $466,702 in 2024 and $331,353 in 2025, both unrestricted. Related cultural support also appears in grants to DC Jazz Festival, which received $70,000 in 2025 and $55,000 in 2024, and Washington Performing Arts Society at $45,000 in 2024. The foundation also funds civic and public-interest work. The Voter Participation Center received $110,000 in 2025, $100,000 in 2023, and $75,000 in 2024, all unrestricted. American Voter Education Fund received $80,000 in 2025 and $65,000 in 2024, also unrestricted.
Typical grant size sits at $3,500 at the 25th percentile, $10,000 at the median, and $25,000 at the 75th percentile, though the recent grant list shows a small number of much larger institutional awards. The foundation is a Regular Funder, and the recent record shows repeat recipients across multiple years rather than one-off gifts. Grants are consistently marked unrestricted funds, indicating flexible general support. It does not fund individuals and does not make program-related investments.
