About Fred C and Katherine B Andersen Foundation
The Fred C and Katherine B Andersen Foundation is a Minnesota-focused funder that makes a small number of very large grants to anchor institutions in health care, community services and youth development. Its giving concentrates on hospital and clinic capital and operational support (notably major gifts to Mayo Clinic and Regions Hospital), community-building projects such as affordable housing, and regional youth organizations. Grants are sizable and strategic rather than numerous, often supporting capital campaigns and general operating for established institutions in the Twin Cities / Rochester area.

About Fred C and Katherine B Andersen Foundation
A $22 million general-support grant to Mayo Foundation sets the tone for Fred C and Katherine B Andersen Foundation’s recent giving: large, institution-level checks for health care, housing, youth services, and community infrastructure. The foundation’s grantmaking is not broad by recipient count; it is concentrated in a few established organizations that can absorb major operating, capital, and campaign support. In the recent grants list, Mayo Clinic received $10 million for capital support in 2025 and another $6 million in 2024, while Regions Hospital Foundation received multiple capital-campaign grants across 2023 and 2024. That pattern shows a funder comfortable with multi-million-dollar commitments over several years, especially when a project ties to hospitals, clinics, or other anchor institutions. Beyond health care, the foundation also supported Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity with $6 million in general operating support in 2024 and Northern Star Council Boy Scouts of America with $10.65 million in general operating support in 2025, indicating that its largest awards extend to housing and youth development as well as medical institutions.
What Fred C and Katherine B Andersen Foundation Funds
Healthcare is a core area of support. The foundation gave $10 million to Mayo Clinic for capital support in 2025 and $1.05 million to Gillette Children’s Hospital Foundation for general operating support in 2025, alongside other medical-system gifts in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Housing is another recurring theme: Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity received $6 million for general operating support in 2024, and CommonBond Communities received $2.5 million for a capital campaign in 2024. The foundation also funds food access and human services, including a $2 million capital-campaign grant to St Croix Valley Food Bank in Hudson, Wisconsin, and a $1.15 million capital-campaign grant to Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities in St Paul. Youth development appears in the record through the $10.65 million general operating grant to Northern Star Council Boy Scouts of America in Fort Snelling.
How Fred C and Katherine B Andersen Foundation Gives
Typical grant size is $25,000 at the 25th percentile, $45,000 at the median, and $125,000 at the 75th percentile, but the recent grants list shows a separate tier of multi-million-dollar awards for selected institutions. The pattern is recurring rather than one-off: organizations such as Mayo Clinic, Regions Hospital Foundation, Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, and Operation Help each appear more than once across recent years. The foundation is a regular funder, not a DAF, and it does not fund individuals. Its active programs allow unsolicited applications, with grants for general operations, programs and projects, and limited capital requests.
