The Florence J Gillmor Foundation makes a small number of very large, local grants focused on direct service and community institutions in the Salt Lake City area. Their giving concentrates on organizations that address access to justice, support for women and families, homelessness services, and higher education, often providing mission-support/general operating funds. They tend to fund established local nonprofits repeatedly rather than a broad base of new recipients.
Concentrated, high-dollar grants to a handful of established local organizations with evidence of repeat funding and general operating/supportive-purpose gifts rather than many small grants
The Florence J Gillmor Foundation gives a small number of very large grants to organizations in Salt Lake City and nearby Utah communities, with most awards aimed at mission support rather than restricted projects. Its recent giving shows repeated backing for access to justice, higher education, women’s services, and homelessness response. The largest recent grant in the file was $1.45 million to And Justice for All in 2023 to support the organization’s mission, followed by $800,000 to Westminster the same year. Those awards sit alongside a pattern of continued support for the same local institutions across multiple years, including Westminster, YWCA, The Road Home, and Fourth Street Clinic. The foundation’s profile is strongly local: the recipient set is concentrated in Utah and centered on organizations serving the Salt Lake City area. Several of the named grantees are broad community institutions, including colleges, social service providers, and legal-aid organizations. The mix suggests a funder that prioritizes established nonprofits with ongoing operating needs and a clear role in the region’s civic and social infrastructure.
Access to justice is a visible part of the foundation’s portfolio. In 2023, it gave $1.45 million to And Justice for All to support the organization’s mission, and in 2024 it followed with another $200,000 for the same purpose. Women’s support and economic empowerment also appear in the record: YWCA received $600,000 in 2024 and $100,000 in 2023, both to support the organization’s mission. The foundation also backs housing and emergency assistance through a $400,000 grant to The Road Home in 2024 and support for Utah Food Bank in both 2023 and 2024. Higher education is another recurring area, with Westminster receiving $800,000 in 2023 and $400,000 in 2024. These grants are framed as mission support, which points to flexible funding across the recipient organizations’ core work.
Typical grant sizes are large: the p25 is $42,500, the median is $50,000, and the p75 is $100,000. The recent grants list also includes much larger institutional awards, which pushes the average relationship toward a few substantial operating grants rather than many small ones. Recipients recur across years, including Westminster, YWCA, Fourth Street Clinic, Utah Food Bank, and The Nature Conservancy. The foundation does not fund individuals and does not make program-related investments. The grant language is consistently mission support, indicating flexible, general operating-style funding rather than narrowly earmarked project grants.
