The CB and Anita Branch Trust, James L. Drought Trustee, concentrates its giving locally in the San Antonio area with a clear preference for Catholic education and institutions, funding both higher education and secondary/parochial schools as well as the local archdiocese. Grants are large and targeted, often made repeatedly to the same beneficiaries, with a secondary interest in local conservation/cultural organizations. Their support appears aimed at institutional capacity (capital campaign, general operating, and student support) rather than broad national programs.
A clear pattern runs through the Cb and Anita Branch Trust James L Drought Trustee’s recent grantmaking: repeated, high-dollar support for Catholic education and church institutions in San Antonio. Two of the largest awards went to Our Lady of the Lake University, including $750,000 in 2025 and $550,000 in 2024, both framed as help to prepare students “to be better people and to succeed.” Holy Cross High School also received major support, with $695,000 in 2024 and $355,000 in 2025 tied to fulfilling educational goals set by US bishops. That same Catholic orientation extends beyond classrooms. The Archdiocese of San Antonio received $300,000 in 2025 and $210,000 in 2024 for capital campaign work, showing interest in institutional building as well as direct school support. The foundation’s giving is not limited to education, but the recent record makes Catholic formation the defining thread, with grants also reaching related religious and community institutions in the same local network.
Catholic higher education is a central theme. Our Lady of the Lake University received $600,000 in 2025 for the same student-focused purpose that also appeared in a $750,000 award that year. Secondary education is another major area: Holy Cross High School got $280,000 in 2025, again tied to educational goals set by US bishops. Institutional support also appears through the Archdiocese of San Antonio, which received $100,000 in 2025 for a capital campaign. Beyond Catholic schooling, the trust has supported local conservation work, including $325,000 to Cibolo Center for Conservation in 2025 for general fund support.
Typical gifts are substantial but concentrated around a core midrange: the p25 is $5,000, the median is $10,000, and the p75 is $25,000. At the same time, the recent grant list shows repeated six-figure awards to the same institutions across 2024 and 2025, suggesting a relationship-based pattern rather than one-off giving. The trust is a private foundation style funder with no individual grants and no program-related investments reported. The available record also shows a local grantmaking scope centered in Texas, with most awards landing in the same metro network year after year.

Concentrated, high-dollar local philanthropy with repeat multi-grant relationships; few large grants focused on institutional stability and capital needs rather than many small, one-off awards.
Notable grantees: Our Lady of the Lake University, Holy Cross High School, Archdiocese of San Antonio, Cibolo Center for Conservation
Grant dollars land overwhelmingly in Texas, with 86% of grants to recipients in the HQ state. San Antonio is the main city in the record, alongside nearby Boerne and Ingram. Recipient locations also extend beyond Texas in smaller numbers, including Cleveland, Ohio, and grantees in Mexico, Italy, India, and Canada. The pattern reflects a local giving footprint with a few out-of-state and international recipients.
Recent grants show a strong preference for Catholic education and church institutions, especially universities, high schools, and archdiocesan work in San Antonio. The list also includes local conservation groups and a few other community-serving organizations.
The reported grant-size distribution is $5,000 at the 25th percentile, $10,000 at the median, and $25,000 at the 75th percentile. The recent grants list also includes several much larger awards in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Yes. The record shows repeated support for the same organizations across 2024 and 2025, including multiple awards to Catholic schools, the archdiocese, and conservation groups. That points to ongoing relationships rather than isolated gifts.
