The Cathy and George Sakellaris Family Foundation makes a small number of relatively large gifts focused on higher education, maritime/sailing programs, and Greek-American civic/cultural causes. Their two sizable grants to Northeastern University suggest a particular interest in supporting local higher-education initiatives (likely in the Boston area), while funding for US Sailing points to support for competitive sailing or youth maritime programming. The grant to the American Hellenic Institute Foundation indicates a priority on Greek-American community or policy and cultural advocacy.
Concentrated, low-volume giving: few but large grants with at least one repeat grantee (Northeastern). Gifts appear targeted to specific institutions rather than broadly distributed small grants.
A $200,000 grant to Northeastern University in 2024 signals a foundation that backs large, flexible gifts rather than a wide scatter of small awards. The Cathy and George Sakellaris Family Foundation’s recent giving centers on higher education, sailing and maritime activity, and Greek-American civic and cultural institutions, with general support appearing throughout the grant list. Northeastern appears more than once, including a second $100,000 gift in 2025, which points to sustained support for that university rather than a one-time award. The foundation also funded US Sailing at $100,000 and several Hellenic organizations, including the American Hellenic Institute Foundation, the Center for Hellenic Music, and the National Hellenic Museum. Those grants sit alongside support for Boston-area institutions such as Massachusetts General Hospital, Dana Farber, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Milton Academy. The pattern suggests a donor advised by family or personal priorities around education, Greek heritage, and civic institutions, with gifts often written as general support and concentrated in Massachusetts and other U.S. nonprofit hubs.
Higher education is a clear thread in the foundation’s grantmaking. They gave $200,000 to Northeastern University in 2024 and another $100,000 in 2025, both for general support. Stanford also appears in the recent grants list, with $50,000 to Leland Stanford Junior University in 2025 and $48,965 to Stanford University in 2024. Greek-American civic and cultural work is another visible area. The American Hellenic Institute Foundation received $94,000 in 2025, while the Center for Hellenic Music got $75,000 the same year. Earlier grants also went to The Hellenic Initiative, the National Hellenic Museum, the Hellenic Women’s Club, St Catherine Greek Orthodox, the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston, and Alpha Omega Council. The foundation also supports sailing and maritime activity. US Sailing received $100,000 in 2024, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution received $25,000 in 2024.
The typical grant size sits at $12,750 at the 25th percentile, $25,000 at the median, and $50,000 at the 75th percentile, but the foundation also makes some much larger gifts. The recent record shows repeated support to the same recipients across years, especially Northeastern University, Dana Farber, The Hellenic Initiative, University of Maine Foundation, and Virginia Tech Foundation. That pattern suggests ongoing relationships rather than purely one-time funding. The foundation is a family foundation, does not fund individuals, and does not make program-related investments. Grants in the recent list are frequently labeled general support, core operating support, or flexible support.
