The Bill & Lois Smith Family Foundation concentrates its giving locally to sustain long-standing community institutions, primarily funding a local Baptist congregation and a youth camp. Grants are directed at operating support rather than project-specific activities, indicating a priority on organizational stability for faith-based and youth-serving nonprofits in their area. The foundation appears relationship-driven, making multiple sizable gifts to the same organizations over time.
Highly concentrated: six grants totaling $246,000 split almost evenly between two repeat grantees. Emphasis on relatively large, unrestricted operational grants to a small number of familiar, locally based organizations.
A defining feature of the Bill & Lois Smith Family Foundation’s recent giving is its repeated operating support for a small set of faith-based and youth-serving institutions, especially First Baptist Church and Camp Beechpoint. Those two recipients appear multiple times across the recent grants list, with support given in both 2023 and 2025 for the church and in 2023 through 2025 for the camp. That pattern points to a foundation that favors steady institutional backing over one-time project awards. The foundation’s grantmaking also reaches beyond Allegan into a wider network of Christian ministries and related nonprofits, including Lead Inc, Billy Graham Evangelical Assoc, Love Inc, Women at Risk, and Life Outreach International. Many awards sit in the five-figure range and are labeled for operations, which suggests a preference for keeping recipient organizations functioning rather than funding discrete initiatives. Across the recent grants, the portfolio is concentrated rather than broad. The foundation gives to a limited number of organizations, with several receiving repeat support and similar-sized awards over time. That makes the Bill & Lois Smith Family Foundation a funder whose identity is closely tied to ongoing relationships with particular ministries and community institutions.
Operational support is the central pattern in the Bill & Lois Smith Family Foundation’s recent grants. First Baptist Church in Allegan received $36,000 in 2023 and $44,000 in both 2024 and 2025, all for operations. Camp Beechpoint Inc also received repeated operating grants of $40,000 in 2023 and 2024 and $42,000 in 2025. The foundation also backs broader Christian ministry work. Billy Graham Evangelical Assoc received $25,000 in 2023, 2024, and 2025 for operations, while Life Outreach International received $10,000 in 2023 and 2024 and $12,000 in 2025. Other operating grants support service-oriented groups such as Love Inc, Women at Risk, and Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries. Together, those awards show a portfolio built around ongoing support for faith-based institutions and ministries rather than narrowly defined projects.
Typical grant sizes cluster tightly: the 25th percentile is $7,000, the median is $8,000, and the 75th percentile is $12,000. The recent grants list also shows repeated awards to the same organizations across multiple years, including a clear multiyear pattern for several recipients. That consistency, paired with operating-only grant purposes, points to relationship-based funding. The foundation is a family foundation, does not fund individuals, and does not make program-related investments.
