The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Foundation focuses on strengthening K–6 arts-integrated learning across Utah by funding statewide systems, research/measurement, and community implementation. Grants go to institutional partners—state education agencies, university researchers, cultural alliances, and United Way—to expand arts programming, measure impact, and support local service/referral infrastructure. Their giving is place-based (Utah) and oriented toward scaling and sustaining arts education at the school and community system level.
The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Foundation’s clearest pattern is its support for arts learning systems that serve K–6 students across Utah. Its recent grants show a mix of statewide education work, university-based measurement, and community arts delivery, with awards such as $200,000 to the University of Utah for arts learning impact measurement research and $175,000 to the Utah State Board of Education for a K–6 integrated arts learning program. The foundation also backs institutions that connect arts education to implementation and outreach, including $200,000 to Utah Cultural Alliance Foundation for cultural arts educational systems and $115,000 to Utah Chamber Artists for a concert series. That focus is reinforced by repeated support for organizations working in schools and community settings. Ballet West received funding for youth arts education and community outreach, while Spy Hop Productions was funded for arts education and mentoring. The foundation’s portfolio also reaches beyond arts programming into related student and family supports, including school readiness, basic needs, scholarships, and health services, all within Utah. Its giving is entirely local, and the grants are directed to institutional partners rather than individuals.
Arts-integrated education is the foundation’s central theme. It gave $175,000 to the Utah State Board of Education for an arts learning program focused on K–6 integration, and $100,000 to United Way of Utah for expanding school readiness programs and direct preschool services. That combination links classroom arts work with early learning support. A second thread is arts access through performance and youth engagement. Ballet West received $100,000 for its Youth Arts Education and Community Outreach Program, and Spy Hop Productions received $50,000 for arts education and mentoring. Utah Chamber Artists was funded $115,000 for a concert series. The foundation also supports research and measurement around arts learning. The University of Utah received $200,000 for arts learning impact measurement research, showing that evaluation is part of how the funder approaches arts education work.
Typical grants cluster tightly around the middle of the range: p25 is $50,000, median is $52,500, and p75 is $100,000. The portfolio shows repeat support for some recipients across multiple years, including the University of Utah, United Way of Utah, Utah Chamber Artists, Ballet West, American Indian Services, and Utah Food Bank. The foundation is a private foundation with annual grants of $2,876,500 and total assets of $28,494,970. It funds individuals as well as institutions, though the recent grants shown here are to organizations.
