The Barer Family Foundation concentrates on healthcare and Jewish community causes, with large, targeted grants to hospitals and Jewish organizations. Giving is focused and purposeful—supporting medical institutions both locally (New Jersey) and in Israel, and contributing to regional Jewish communal infrastructure. The foundation favors a small number of sizable gifts rather than many small awards.
Concentrated giving: a small number of large grants with repeated multi-year or multiple awards to the same health and Jewish community grantees rather than broad, one-off support.
Barer Family Foundation Inc C/o Dr Sol J Barer makes large, targeted gifts to healthcare institutions and Jewish communal organizations, with a clear pattern of repeat support across the same recipients. The biggest recent award in the file is $365,000 to American Friends of Rambam in 2025, followed by additional grants to the same organization in 2024 and 2023. That repeated support sits alongside hospital funding in New Jersey, including Ahs Hospital Corp in Morristown and Hackensack Meridian Health Foundation in Edison. The foundation also backs Jewish community infrastructure, with grants to Jewish Federation of Metrowest and Union County Torah Center. Its recent giving suggests a limited number of recipients receive meaningful amounts rather than a broad spread of small awards. The pattern is consistent with a funder that prioritizes direct institutional support in health and community life, especially where there is a connection to New Jersey and Israeli medical and civic organizations.
Healthcare is a central theme. In 2023, the foundation gave $205,500 to Ahs Hospital Corp in Morristown for public welfare, and it followed with $91,667 in 2025 to the same recipient. It also supported Hackensack Meridian Health Foundation in Edison with $10,000 in 2024. Jewish communal funding is another visible area. Jewish Federation of Metrowest in Whippany received $100,000 in 2023, while Union County Torah Center in Westfield received $50,000 in 2024 and $29,000 in 2025. The foundation also gave $50,000 each in 2024 to Pef Israel Endowment Funds Inc and American Friends of Magen David Adom, showing a mix of domestic communal support and Israel-connected institutions.
Typical grants are sizable: the 25th percentile is $34,500, the median is $50,000, and the 75th percentile is $150,000. The grant list shows repeat recipients across multiple years, including American Friends of Rambam, Ahs Hospital Corp, Family Promise, and Union County Torah Center, which points to ongoing relationships rather than one-time awards. The foundation does not fund individuals and does not make program-related investments. Its recent grants are all recorded in the United States, and the pattern favors direct institutional grants.
