The William E Seale Family Foundation concentrates a small number of large grants, primarily to cultural, educational, and local higher-education institutions in Maryland and the mid‑Atlantic, with occasional support for coastal science research and emergency food relief. They favor multi‑hundred‑thousand dollar gifts to established nonprofits (arts center, K–8 Catholic school, community college, university research) and make repeat investments in select partners.
A $1,000,000 grant to Maryland Hall in Annapolis stands out as a signature recent award for the William E Seale Family Foundation, which concentrates a small number of large grants to established 501(c)(3) organizations. The foundation’s recent giving reaches arts and cultural institutions, Catholic K–8 education, higher education, coastal science research, and humanitarian relief, with several recipients appearing more than once across 2023 and 2024. That pattern suggests relationship-based support rather than one-off gifts. Recent awards include repeat support for Washington Jesuit Academy, a $400,000 grant to Anne Arundel Community College Foundation, and multiple grants to Virginia Tech-linked research entities. The foundation also backed emergency food response through World Central Kitchen and supported health and community needs through groups such as Ocean Reef Medical Center Foundation, Yellow Ribbon Fund, and Doctors Without Borders. Its gifts are typically substantial enough to function as major operating or organizational support for mature nonprofits. Although the foundation gives nationally, its recent grant list includes a strong Mid-Atlantic thread, especially Maryland and Washington, DC, alongside selected partners in Florida, Virginia, and other states.
In arts and culture, the foundation made a $1,000,000 grant to Maryland Hall in Annapolis for support of the organization. It also gave $100,000 to Owls Head Transportation Museum in Maine, showing that cultural support is not limited to one region. Education is another clear thread. Washington Jesuit Academy received $500,000 in 2023 and $400,000 in 2024, while San Miguel School received $300,000 in 2023 and $200,000 in 2024. The foundation also gave $400,000 to Anne Arundel Community College Foundation and $300,000 to St Mary's College of Maryland Foundation. Its science and environmental giving includes $600,000 and $350,000 to Virginia Tech Foundation Seale Coastal Zone Observatory, plus $250,000 in both 2023 and 2024 to Virginia Tech Fralin Biomedical Research Institute. Outside those areas, the foundation supported emergency response with $400,000 and $300,000 to World Central Kitchen Inc.
Typical grant size is large: the 25th percentile is $38,750, the median is $100,000, and the 75th percentile is $237,500. The recent list shows both one-time awards and repeated support to the same organizations across 2023 and 2024, including multi-year grants to several partners. Giving is to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, and the source data describes the foundation as using organizational support / general operating style grants with unspecified project focus. No application process is stated in the provided data.
