The Steven & Sharon Sutton Family Foundation concentrates its giving on Jewish religious and community life, particularly supporting Orthodox synagogues and local community centers in the New York/New Jersey area (notably Deal, NJ). It also funds Jewish-oriented family support and special-needs services, and makes repeat grants to the same institutions, suggesting ongoing local partnerships and commitments. A sizable share of the budget is directed through a few mid-sized gifts rather than many tiny awards.
Concentrated, repeat support to a small set of local Jewish organizations — multiple mid-sized grants to the same grantees rather than many one-off awards; geographically focused in the NY/NJ Jewish communities.
A $59,843 unrestricted grant to Miscellaneous Charities Under 1000 in New York marks the clearest signal in the Steven & Sharon Sutton Family Foundation’s recent giving: it uses flexible support to back Jewish communal life through a small number of meaningful awards. The foundation’s pattern is local and relationship-based, with grants repeatedly landing in Brooklyn, Deal, and other New York and New Jersey Jewish communities. Recent grants also show support for synagogue infrastructure and neighborhood congregational life, including Shaare Zion Congregation in Brooklyn and Synagogue of Deal in Deal, NJ. The foundation’s giving is not spread broadly across many regions; it is concentrated in the New York Jewish corridor, where it appears to support operating needs and community-level institutions through unrestricted gifts. Its recent award list also shows a mix of larger mid-range grants and smaller follow-on grants, suggesting a portfolio built around recurring local commitments rather than one-off project funding. Alongside synagogues and community centers, the foundation has supported family-building, special-needs, and other Jewish service organizations, including Bonei Olam and Care for Special Needs Foundation Inc. The overall picture is of a family foundation funding practical support for institutions that serve Orthodox and other Jewish communities in its area.
A major thread in the foundation’s giving is synagogue and congregational support. It gave $27,476 to Shaare Zion Congregation in Brooklyn in 2024 and $10,419 to Synagogue of Deal in 2023, both unrestricted. Community-center funding appears as well: Dsn Community Center in Oakhurst received $8,000 in 2024 and $5,400 in 2023, showing more than one round of support. The foundation also funds Jewish family and special-needs services. Bonei Olam received $9,000 in 2023 and another $1,600 in 2024, while Care for Special Needs Foundation Inc received $5,200 in 2024. In education and Jewish communal service, it supported Yeshivat Darche Eres Inc, Ahi Ezer Yeshiva, and The Safe Foundation, all in Brooklyn. These grants point to a portfolio centered on institutions serving families, students, and vulnerable community members.
