The Sacks Family Foundation concentrates large, strategic gifts to major universities and civic institutions, with a strong Chicago-area orientation. Its giving emphasizes institutional strengthening — endowed faculty positions, research/urban labs, and capital/construction projects — alongside support for the Barack Obama presidential library and Jewish communal organizations. The foundation typically funds a small set of repeat grantees with multi-grant relationships rather than making many small awards.
A defining pattern of Sacks Family Foundation C/o Michael Sacks is its concentration of large gifts to a small set of repeat institutions, especially in Chicago and Evanston. The largest recent awards include seven-figure support for Jewish United Fund, Northwestern University, and The Barack Obama Foundation, signaling a portfolio built around universities, civic institutions, and Jewish communal philanthropy. The foundation also backs major cultural and educational anchors such as The Art Institute of Chicago, Steppenwolf Theatre Co, Hyde Park Art Center, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Its recent grants show a strong preference for institutional strengthening over scattered one-off awards. Northwestern received support for the Osborn Endowed Professorship Fund, while The Barack Obama Foundation was funded for presidential library work and general operations. University of Chicago received support for Urban Labs, and Tulane University was funded for construction costs and operating support. The foundation’s giving also reaches health-related and public-safety work through Northwestern Memorial Foundation and Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund. Overall, the grant pattern points to long-horizon support for higher education, civic leadership, arts institutions, and community organizations with established roles in the Chicago area.
In higher education, the foundation backs endowed talent and university capacity. It gave $1,050,000 to Northwestern University to support the Osborn Endowed Professorship Fund, and later gave Northwestern another $1,000,000 for general operating support. It also supported University of Chicago with $500,000 for Urban Labs, showing an interest in research tied to public policy and urban issues. Arts and culture are another clear lane. The foundation gave $262,500 to The Art Institute of Chicago to support the exhibitions trust, $230,000 to Steppenwolf Theatre Co for Steppenwolf Education, and $200,000 to Hyde Park Art Center for general operating support. Museum work appears as well: Museum of Contemporary Art received funding tied to exhibitions, education programs, and performances for its 50th anniversary. Community and civic work also appear in the portfolio. Hope Chicago Inc received repeated support across 2023, 2024, and 2025, and Jewish United Fund received major program support in both 2023 and 2024.
