The Ray Hickey Foundation makes a small number of large, place-based grants in the Pacific Northwest that strengthen regional institutions in health, veterinary medicine, animal welfare, and local cultural assets. They favor capital and endowment-style support (facility improvements, endowed research positions, and program funding) and back both major universities/health systems and community nonprofits that serve Clark County and neighboring Oregon communities. Grants indicate a particular interest in animal-related causes (both veterinary education and direct animal welfare) and in improving clinical and therapeutic services for children and hospice care.
A defining thread in Ray Hickey Foundation grantmaking is repeated support for animal welfare and veterinary medicine, alongside place-based health and community services in the Pacific Northwest. The foundation gave $500,000 to the OSU Foundation for Oregon State University’s vet medicine college, and it paired that higher-education support with a $325,000 grant to Humane Society for SW Washington for shelter, rescue assistance, and rehoming for small animals in Clark County, Washington. The foundation also backs health and care settings that serve local residents. Its recent awards include $250,000 to PeaceHealth SW Medical Center for facility improvements for Ray Hickey Hospice House and $300,000 to Oregon Health Sciences University for endowment support for the head of pediatric research. In the same recent period, it supported equine-assisted therapy, food assistance, youth services, and maritime history institutions, showing a portfolio that mixes regional institutions with direct-service nonprofits. Grants are typically substantial and often tied to a specific building, program, or named role rather than broad unrestricted support. The foundation funds individuals and gives regionally, with most awards landing in Washington and Oregon.
Animal-related work is a clear priority. Ray Hickey Foundation gave $325,000 to Humane Society for SW Washington for shelter, rescue assistance, and rehoming for small animals in Clark County, Washington, and another $50,000 to Oregon Humane Society for animal adoption, education, medical, and humane law enforcement programs. Health and care services are another major strand. The foundation awarded $250,000 to PeaceHealth SW Medical Center for facility improvements for Ray Hickey Hospice House and $300,000 to Oregon Health Sciences University for endowment support for the head of pediatric research. It also supports specialized services for children and families. Recent grants include $150,000 to Healing Opportunities Foundation for equine therapy services for children with developmental disabilities, $50,000 to Park Academy for educational assistance for dyslexic youths, and $50,000 to YWCA of Clark County for care services for low-income families.
Typical grant sizes are large: the 25th percentile is $25,000, the median is $50,000, and the 75th percentile is $80,000. The recent record shows repeated support to several organizations across multiple years, including Humane Society for SW Washington, Healing Opportunities Foundation, Meals on Wheels, Sunshine Division, Self Enhancement Inc, New Avenues for Youth, Oregon Coast Aquarium, PeaceHealth SW Medical Center, and the Ray Hickey Hospice House. Awards often support facilities, endowments, or operating needs tied to a specific program. The foundation funds individuals and does not make program-related investments.
