    About North Carolina Glaxosmithkline Foundation

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation focuses on strengthening North Carolina's STEM and health workforce pipelines by funding universities, community colleges, and statewide STEM education partners — with special emphasis on rural areas, nursing education, and diversifying the public health workforce. It also funds informal science education and outdoor STEM engagement (zoos, arboretum, planetarium/Science Festival) and student support programs that remove financial barriers so underserved and underrepresented students can complete credentials.

    About North Carolina Glaxosmithkline Foundation

North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Inc. centers its grantmaking on North Carolina STEM and health workforce pipelines, with a recurring emphasis on rural nursing education, dual-admission pathways, and efforts to diversify the public health workforce. One of its largest recent grants went to UNC Chapel Hill for the Equity Fellows program, which supports students facing barriers to on-time graduation and dropout. Another major grant supported East Carolina University Foundation Inc. for "Growing a Diverse Public Health Workforce for Rural North Carolina through Graduate School Pathways," showing how the foundation connects financial support to workforce development goals. The foundation also backs programs that move students from community college into four-year and graduate study. NC Community Colleges Foundation received support for rural college nursing education, while North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University was funded for Aggie Commitment, a dual-admission STEM pathway with participating community colleges. Its portfolio also reaches informal STEM learning, including zoo-based and arboretum programs, and student support grants that help undergraduates persist through hardship. The result is a grantmaker focused less on isolated projects than on building education-to-career pathways within the state.

What North Carolina Glaxosmithkline Foundation Funds

In workforce development, the foundation funded NC Community Colleges Foundation for rural college nursing education and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University for Aggie Commitment, a dual-admission STEM pathway with participating community colleges. Those grants show a clear interest in transitions from two-year to four-year programs and into careers. In public health, East Carolina University Foundation Inc. received support for "Growing a Diverse Public Health Workforce for Rural North Carolina through Graduate School Pathways," linking scholarships and stipends to graduate training. On student retention, UNC Chapel Hill was funded for the Equity Fellows program, aimed at students who do not graduate on time and may be at risk of dropping out. The foundation also supports informal STEM learning. NC Zoological Society Inc. received funding for self-directed learning at the North Carolina Zoo, and North Carolina Arboretum Society was funded to expand youth educational STEM programs.

How North Carolina Glaxosmithkline Foundation Gives

Typical grant size clusters around a median of $100,000, with a lower quartile of $31,700 and an upper quartile of $225,000. The foundation’s recent awards include both six- and seven-figure commitments, alongside smaller program grants and recognition awards. The pattern suggests multi-year support more than one-off funding: several grants appear as addenda to earlier agreements, and some recipients recur across years with related purposes. The foundation is a grantmaking private foundation with no program-related investments listed, and it also funds individuals through scholarship and stipend pathways. Unsolicited applications are accepted for Traditional Grants, Ribbon of Hope Grants, and Child Health Recognition Awards.

The county and campus pattern is state-wide rather than metro-only, reaching community colleges, universities, and statewide education partners.
