About New England Foundation for the Arts

A defining feature of New England Foundation for the Arts Incorporated is the repeated use of general operating, creation, and presenting support for arts organizations and presenters across dance, theater, music, public art, and cultural programming. Their recent grants show that they back both organizations that produce work and the intermediaries that help move that work to audiences. The largest recent grant in the dataset is $129,000 to National Performance Network in New Orleans for general operating, creation, and/or presenting support. Other major awards include $96,625 to Danceworks Inc in New York and $87,000 to The Tank LLC in New York, both for the same broad support category. That pattern suggests a funder that uses flexible funding to support arts infrastructure as well as project activity. The foundation’s program list adds more detail about how it works in practice: it supports touring, presentation, travel, residency development, and public art collaborations through named initiatives such as ArtsHERE, Crossroads: Touring New England, National Dance Project Presentation Grant, and National Theater Project Presentation Grant. Its recent grants also include organizations in New York, Massachusetts, Louisiana, Minnesota, and California, showing a national reach alongside a New England base of operations.
