The Mayr George H - Main foundation concentrates its giving almost exclusively on Catholic education, funding both secondary and higher education institutions. Grants are large and targeted — notably a substantial scholarship award to St. Francis High School (La Cañada) and general operating support to Loyola Marymount University — indicating a preference for supporting faith-based educational missions and student aid in California. The foundation appears donor-directed toward a small number of significant awards rather than broad community philanthropy.
Concentrated, high-dollar grants to a very small number of faith-based educational institutions (few awards, sizable amounts, one-time or infrequent rather than many small grants).
Mayr George H - Main puts Catholic education at the center of its grantmaking, with awards that often arrive as scholarship support or general operating support for faith-based schools and universities. The largest recent grant in the list is $230,000 to St Francis High School of La Canada for scholarships, a signal that student aid is a core part of the foundation’s approach. Other recurring awards show the same pattern at the college level: Loyola Marymount University received $125,000 in 2025 for general operating support and $110,000 in 2024 for the same purpose. The foundation also supports Catholic secondary schools through sizable scholarship grants to institutions such as St Anthony High School, Bishop Montgomery High School, and Mayfield Senior School of the Holy Child. Its recent grants are concentrated among Jesuit, Sacred Heart, Holy Child, and other Catholic institutions, suggesting a focused, donor-directed style of giving rather than broad programmatic philanthropy. The mix of scholarship and operating support indicates attention both to access for students and to institutional stability across the Catholic education sector.
Catholic secondary education is the clearest theme in the recent grants. Mayr George H - Main gave $80,000 to St Anthony High School for scholarships, $80,000 to Bishop Montgomery High School for scholarships, and $75,000 to Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy for scholarships. On the higher-education side, the foundation backed Loyola Marymount University with $125,000 for general operating support in 2025 and $110,000 for the same purpose in 2024. It also supported Jesuit schooling at Verbum Dei Jesuit High School with $75,000 and $50,000 for general operating support. Scholarship aid extends to other Catholic institutions as well, including Santa Clara University with a $50,000 scholarship grant. Across these awards, the foundation combines student aid with unrestricted support for school operations.
The typical grant size sits at $30,000 at the 25th percentile, $40,000 at the median, and $60,000 at the 75th percentile. The recent list shows both one-time awards and repeat support to the same institutions across multiple years, including Loyola Marymount University, St Francis High School of La Canada, Verbum Dei Jesuit High School, and Junipero Serra High School a Corp. The foundation is a private grantmaker that does not fund individuals and does not make program-related investments. Its awards are mostly targeted rather than open-ended, combining scholarships with general operating support.
