The Maffei Foundation is a highly concentrated education-focused donor that directs the bulk of its assets to elite academic institutions and alma‑mater causes, with sizable, multi-year gifts to colleges and graduate schools. Secondary priorities include selective secondary boarding schools, children's health (diabetes), and occasional local land/greenway conservation. Grants are few but large, often earmarked as charitable contributions to institutional fundraising drives.
Very concentrated giving: a small number of large grants, dominated by recurring, major donations to a single core beneficiary (Dartmouth). Mostly institutional charitable contributions rather than many small community grants.
A defining feature of Maffei Foundation is the scale and concentration of its support for Dartmouth College Fund, with three recent grants of $4,639,720 in 2024, $4,583,834 in 2023, and $500,000 in 2025. That pattern places alumni-linked higher education at the center of the foundation’s giving. The foundation also makes sizable institutional gifts to Harvard Business and Groton School, reinforcing a clear preference for colleges, graduate schools, and selective independent schools. Its grantmaking is not limited to education. Recent gifts also support Children's Diabetes Foundation, National Jewish Health, and other health-related institutions, while a smaller set of grants reaches conservation and community organizations such as High Line Canal Conservancy and Funhouse Commons. Most awards are described as charitable contributions, and the recent record shows a mix of very large gifts and smaller institutional support. With annual grants of $11,096,462 and a regional giving scope, the foundation’s portfolio is structured around a few recurring institutional relationships rather than a broad number of recipients.
Education is the clearest theme in the recent record. In 2024, Maffei Foundation gave $700,000 to Harvard Business for charitable contribution, adding graduate business education to its college-centered giving. The same year it gave $100,000 to Groton School, an independent boarding school, showing support for selective secondary education as well as higher education. Health-related giving appears in several forms. The foundation gave $104,800 to Children's Diabetes Foundation in 2024 and $5,200 to MD Anderson in 2025, both tied to medical causes. It also made a $25,000 grant to Melanoma Research Alliance in 2023 and a $5,000 grant to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in 2024. Beyond education and health, the foundation has supported place-based work such as a $83,333 grant to High Line Canal Conservancy in 2025 and a $10,000 grant to Denver Art Museum in 2024.
Typical grants are modest compared with the foundation’s largest awards: the distribution sits at $1,000 at the 25th percentile, $5,000 at the median, and $25,000 at the 75th percentile. That range reflects a structure built around a few very large institutional gifts alongside many smaller charitable contributions. The recent record also shows repetition over multiple years, especially for Dartmouth College Fund, which received grants in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The foundation is not indicated as funding individuals or making program-related investments. Its recent grants are described as charitable contributions rather than competitive awards.
