Its funding is focused on strengthening nursing education at Johns Hopkins and supporting hands-on community workforce development and urban services through Civic Works. The foundation favors general operating support rather than tightly restricted program grants.
Highly concentrated: very few, large grants split between two repeat grantees; favors general/operating support and Baltimore-based organizations.
Leonard and Helen R Stulman Charitable makes large general support grants to a small set of Baltimore institutions, with repeated awards to Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and Civic Works Inc. The foundation’s recent record shows a consistent pattern of backing operating needs rather than one-time project-only funding, with several grantees appearing across multiple years. Nursing education and clinical training at Johns Hopkins has received some of the largest awards in the dataset, while Civic Works has been supported for hands-on workforce development and urban service work. Beyond those core relationships, the foundation also funds community-serving organizations tied to legal aid, counseling, health access, and refugee or family services. The grant list points to a funder that stays close to place and to a narrow circle of institutions, using sizable unrestricted or general-purpose awards to support established local nonprofits. Recipients such as Jewish Community Services Inc, Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland Inc, Baltimore Corps, and Healthcare for Homeless Inc show that its giving extends across workforce, legal, health, and social-service infrastructure in Baltimore.
Nursing education is one of the clearest themes in the foundation’s giving. It awarded $993,987 in 2023 and $665,500 in 2024 to Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, then added $250,000 in 2025, all marked general support. Workforce development is another recurring area: Civic Works Inc received $474,000 in 2023, $437,739 in 2024, and $478,000 in 2025 for its broader urban job-training and service work. The foundation also backs legal and counseling access. Pro Bono Counseling Project Inc received $125,000 in 2023 and $100,000 in 2024, while Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service Inc received $115,670 in 2023. Health and emergency services appear as well, including support for Healthcare for Homeless Inc and Baltimore Crisis Response Inc.
Typical grant size sits at $50,000 at the 25th percentile, $70,790 at the median, and $100,000 at the 75th percentile, though the recent file also includes several much larger awards. The pattern is clearly recurring: Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, Civic Works Inc, and Pro Bono Counseling Project Inc all appear in multiple years, and several other Baltimore organizations recur as well. The foundation is a regular funder rather than a DAF and does not fund individuals or make program-related investments. Recent grants are marked GENERAL, indicating broad operating or unrestricted support rather than tightly restricted project-only funding.
