The Karp Family Foundation concentrates its giving in Greater Boston on large, institution-level gifts that support children's health, youth services, Jewish communal life, and civic/identity-focused education. They fund both major hospitals and community-based youth organizations, and also support Jewish federation-type infrastructure and classroom programs that address history, identity, and inclusion.
Highly concentrated: a small number of large grants dominate giving. Mix of major institutional gifts and repeat support to a local youth services provider; primarily one-off large charitable contributions rather than many small awards.
A defining pattern for Karp Family Foundation Stephen R and Jill E Karp Trustees is the scale of its support for Boston Children's Hospital: a $1,990,000 charitable contribution in 2024 stands out among its recent grants. The foundation also made another major gift to Boston Youth Sanctuary, including $990,000 in 2024 and $725,000 in 2023, showing sustained support for youth-serving institutions. Across the recent grants list, the foundation gives large charitable contributions to hospitals, youth services, Jewish communal organizations, and schools or education groups tied to identity and civic learning. Combined Jewish Philanthropies received $510,000 in 2024, while Facing History & Ourselves received $500,000 in both 2023 and 2025. That mix points to a funder that backs both direct service providers and broader institutional infrastructure. Additional grants extend to community health, youth homelessness prevention, and education-focused organizations, with checks often large enough to indicate support for major operating or capital needs rather than small project awards.
Children’s health is a clear priority. In 2024, the foundation gave $1,990,000 to Boston Children's Hospital as a charitable contribution, and it also supported Mt Auburn Hospital with $25,000 in 2024 and 2025. Youth services are another visible theme: Boston Youth Sanctuary received $990,000 in 2024 and $400,000 in 2025, alongside an earlier $725,000 grant in 2023. Jewish communal life appears through institutional support as well, including $510,000 to Combined Jewish Philanthropies and $160,000 to Temple Beth Avodah. The foundation also backs civic and classroom-oriented education; Facing History & Ourselves received $500,000 in both 2023 and 2025.
Typical grant size is $10,000 at the 25th percentile, $25,000 at the median, and $50,000 at the 75th percentile, but the recent list also includes several much larger charitable contributions. The pattern suggests both sizable institutional gifts and smaller supporting grants. Recipients appear across multiple years, including Boston Youth Sanctuary, Facing History & Ourselves, Union College, The Joey Fund, Theatre Workshop of Nantucket Inc, Hospitality Homes Inc, and Mt Auburn Hospital, which points to repeat relationships rather than one-off giving only. The foundation is a Regular Funder and does not fund individuals or make program-related investments.
