The Joseph and Inez E Carbone Foundation concentrates its philanthropy locally on supporting acute-care healthcare in the Utica/Mohawk Valley area. All recorded giving went to the Mohawk Valley Health System Foundation across multiple grants, indicating a preference for sustaining a single regional hospital system via general operating or program support. The foundation appears focused on strengthening local health infrastructure rather than distributing funds across many causes or geographies.
Highly concentrated and repeat-focused: all recorded giving comprises three grants to a single grantee (Mohawk Valley Health System Foundation), indicating targeted, sustained support rather than broad or one-off funding.
The Joseph and Inez E Carbone Foundation has made Mohawk Valley Health System Foundation its clearest recurring beneficiary, with three large general donations recorded in 2023, 2024, and 2025, including a $110,000 gift in 2025. That pattern points to a funder built around steady support for local health infrastructure in Utica rather than broad, dispersed grantmaking. Beyond the hospital system, the foundation’s recent grants show a consistent tilt toward organizations serving people in the Utica/Mohawk Valley area, including human services, education, arts, and community institutions. Its giving profile is also shaped by relatively modest check sizes outside the largest awards. Recorded gifts include support for Utica University, Kelberman Center, House of the Good Shepherd, and Masonic Medical Research, all of which received general donations. The foundation’s stated grantmaking is regional, and its recent activity stays close to Utica and nearby Mohawk Valley communities. Across the record on file, the foundation appears to favor unrestricted support rather than program-specific awards, suggesting an emphasis on organizational flexibility and core operations.
Healthcare is the foundation’s anchor area. Mohawk Valley Health System Foundation received $100,000 in 2023 and 2024, followed by $110,000 in 2025, all listed as general donations. That repeated pattern makes hospital support the most visible thread in the record. The foundation also supports human services and community care organizations. Upstate Cerebral Palsy received $21,500 in 2023, while House of the Good Shepherd received $10,500 in 2023 and $9,400 in 2025. Rescue Mission of Utica was funded in both 2023 and 2025. Education and local capacity-building appear as another strand. Utica University received $20,000 in 2024 and $10,000 in 2025, and Utica College received $20,000 in 2023. The foundation also gave $5,000 to Landmark's Society in 2025 and $4,000 to Masonic Medical Research in both 2024 and 2025.
Typical grant size is small relative to the foundation’s largest awards: the 25th percentile is $1,000, the median is $1,500, and the 75th percentile is $2,500. The recent record shows repeated support to the same recipients across multiple years, including Mohawk Valley Health System Foundation, Kelberman Center, House of the Good Shepherd, Rescue Mission of Utica, and United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area Inc. The foundation is not a funder of individuals and does not make program-related investments. The listed grants are overwhelmingly labeled general donation, which aligns with flexible, unrestricted support rather than project-specific awards.
