The Jean and David W Wallace Foundation concentrates philanthropic support on higher education, independent K–12 schools, and medical institutions in the New England region, with a particular emphasis on capital projects, endowments, and leadership positions. Grants are often large, multi-year or repeat gifts directed to campus buildings, endowed chairs, cancer care facilities, and arts leadership — signaling a preference for institutional strengthening over small program grants.
A defining feature of Jean and David W Wallace Foundation Inc is its repeated use of seven-figure grants for institutional strengthening, especially at hospitals, schools, and universities in Connecticut and nearby New England states. Recent awards include $1,000,000 for Greenwich Hospital’s endowment fund for Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center and another $1,000,000 for its neurology chair, alongside $1,000,000 grants to Greenwich Academy for the Leading the Way Campaign lower school building in both 2023 and 2024. The foundation also backed academic medicine with $1,000,000 to Yale University’s Dean of Medicine Fund and $1,000,000 to Yale School of Medicine’s endowed chair dean of medicine fund. Those gifts fit a pattern of funding capital projects, endowed positions, and annual funds rather than short-term program awards. The grant record also shows support for independent schools, higher education, and health care institutions, with additional attention to arts leadership and community organizations. Across the recent grants list, the foundation’s giving is centered on organizations in the New Haven–Greenwich corridor and other New England campuses, with a consistent preference for named funds that strengthen leadership, facilities, and long-term capacity.
In health care, the foundation has supported both clinical care and professional development. It gave $100,000 to Greenwich Hospital Education Fund for Investing in Our Health Care Professionals and $100,000 to Greenwich Hospital for an education fund, while also making a $25,000 grant to Greenwich Emergency Medical Service for its annual fund. For K-12 education, Jean and David W Wallace Foundation Inc funded Adam J Lewis Academy with $200,000 for building renovations and $100,000 for scholarships, and it gave Greenwich Academy $25,000 for the Molly H. King Fund for Character, Confidence, and Leadership. In higher education, Salve Regina received $600,000 for the President's Innovation Fund for Strategic Planning, and Smith College received $600,000 for the Directorship for the Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. The foundation also extended support to arts and community institutions, including $50,000 to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum for its annual fund.
