The Halvorsen Family Foundation directs very large, targeted gifts to elite medical centers, a leading university medical development office, and select cultural institutions. Their giving prioritizes high-impact institutional support for biomedical research and clinical care, with additional major commitments to arts organizations and pooled donor vehicles that can regrant or advise. Grants are concentrated among a handful of prominent national institutions rather than many small local nonprofits.
A $20,000,000 grant to Stanford Medical Development in 2025 stands out in the Halvorsen Family Foundation C/o Ole Andreas Halvorsen Trustee’s recent record. That gift, alongside multi-million-dollar support for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and The Hospital for Special Surgery Fund Inc, shows a pattern of large institutional funding for medical research and clinical care. The foundation also backs higher-education development offices and campus-linked medical programs, including Weill Cornell Medicine and The Rockefeller University, suggesting a strong interest in organizations that connect philanthropy to research and training. Beyond medicine, the foundation has given major support to arts and cultural institutions. Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute received several grants across 2023 to 2025, including a $5,450,000 award in 2024, while Williams College also appears repeatedly in the recent grants list. The mix of recipients points to concentrated, high-dollar funding for a limited set of established organizations rather than broad small-ticket grantmaking. The foundation’s recent activity also includes conservation, athletics, and donor-advised or charitable vehicles, but those categories appear alongside the larger institutional commitments rather than replacing them.
In medical and healthcare services, the foundation gave $5,250,000 to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for medical support and $1,250,000 to Weill Cornell Medicine for medical support. It also funded The Hospital for Special Surgery Fund Inc with $2,000,000 in 2023, followed by $100,000 in 2024 and $60,000 in 2025. In education, the grants list includes $600,000 to The Rockefeller University in 2023, $150,000 in 2024, and $50,000 in 2025, plus $550,000 to Williams College in 2024 and $350,000 in 2025. Teachers College Columbia University also received $100,000 in both 2023 and 2024. The foundation has also supported arts and conservation: Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute received $5,450,000 in 2024 and $479,000 in 2023, while Wildlife Conservation Society received $350,000 in 2024, $100,000 in 2025, and $100,000 in 2023.

Notable grantees: Stanford Medical Development, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, The Hospital for Special Surgery Fund Inc, JP Morgan Charitable Fund
Typical grant sizes cluster in the mid-five figures to low-six figures, with p25 at $10,000, median at $29,075, and p75 at $100,000. The grant list shows both very large institutional awards and a longer tail of smaller gifts at $50,000 to $100,000. The pattern also shows repeated support to the same organizations across multiple years, including several recipients appearing in 2023, 2024, and 2025. That suggests an ongoing relationship model rather than isolated one-time awards.
