The Guttman Family Foundation concentrates its giving on Brooklyn-area Orthodox Jewish institutions, providing multi-thousand-dollar gifts to synagogues and Jewish community funds. Their grants are directed to a small number of religious congregations and a Jewish communal fund, indicating a preference for supporting local faith-based community infrastructure and programming.
Concentrated, relatively large gifts to a very small set of repeat grantees—multiple grants to the same congregations and a community fund—focused on local, faith-based institutions rather than broad geographic diversification.
Notable grantees: THE OJC FUND, CONG BEIS SHMIEL TZVI, CONG YETEV LEV
The Guttman Family Foundation’s recent grants center on Orthodox Jewish congregations and related communal institutions in Brooklyn and nearby New York communities, with large general-support awards recurring across the same local network. In 2024, its largest listed grant was $132,700 to Cong Yetev Lev in Brooklyn for general support, followed by $107,300 in 2023 to The OJC Fund, also for general support. That pattern points to a funder that backs ongoing religious and community infrastructure rather than isolated projects. The foundation’s giving also reaches congregations beyond Brooklyn when they are part of the same Orthodox community ecosystem. Cong Beis Shmiel Tzvi in Monroe received $70,000 in 2023 and $66,000 in 2024, while other substantial awards went to Congregation Melitz Lizensk, Chasdei Avrohom, and related institutions. Across the grants list, support is usually unrestricted or described simply as general support, which indicates a preference for operational flexibility. The scale of the awards ranges from smaller five-figure gifts to six-figure grants, showing a mix of major commitments and broader community-level support.
A clear theme is synagogue and congregation support. The foundation gave $48,400 in 2024 to Cong Melitz Lizensk for general support and $13,000 in 2023 to Cong Berech Moshe for the same purpose. It also backed Mamleches Hatorah with $15,000 in 2024 and $7,500 in 2023, suggesting repeat support for neighborhood religious institutions. A second area is Jewish communal philanthropy. The OJC Fund received $107,300 in 2023 and $55,700 in 2024, both for general support, making it one of the foundation’s largest recurring recipients. Smaller grants also went to Keren Ezra in Philadelphia and Keren Mugon Imoshia in Brooklyn. The foundation also supports auxiliary Orthodox community needs. Examples include $16,055 to Keren Chasanim, $18,000 to Bayis Lepleitos, and $5,000 to Cong Mikvah Tahara, all listed as general support.
Typical grants cluster in the low five figures: the p25 is $4,800, the median is $10,000, and the p75 is $20,000. The distribution includes a few much larger awards, including six-figure grants. Recipients often appear across multiple years, such as Cong Yetev Lev, The OJC Fund, Cong Beis Shmiel Tzvi, Chasdei Avrohom, and Mamleches Hatorah, which points to recurring support rather than one-off giving. The foundation is a family foundation, and the grants shown are overwhelmingly described as general support, with no program-specific application process indicated in the data.
