The Gladys and Roland Harriman Foundation concentrates its funding on large, institutional grants to established nonprofits focused on disaster response and youth services. The foundation makes sizable awards to the American Red Cross for emergency relief and to local youth development organizations in New York City, indicating a dual national/local emphasis on humanitarian aid and urban youth programs. Giving is sparse but substantial, favoring a handful of trusted organizations rather than many small grants.
Concentrated, high-dollar grants to a small number of repeat and flagship organizations; combines national-level emergency relief funding with targeted local investments in NYC youth services.
The Gladys and Roland Harriman Foundation gives large general-support grants to a small set of established nonprofits, with emergency response and youth programming appearing repeatedly in the recent record. Its largest recent awards went to the American National Red Cross for general support in 2024 and 2025, and to Boys Club of New York Inc for general support in 2025. That combination points to a funder that backs both national humanitarian capacity and local youth-serving institutions rather than a wide mix of short-term projects. The foundation’s recent grants also show consistent support for mission-based institutions that already have deep operating structures. Memorial Sloan Kettering received multiple general-support grants, while Weill Cornell Medicine and the Joan and Sanford I Weill Medical College each appear among the larger awards. In addition, the foundation has given substantial support to cultural, educational, and community organizations such as the Shelburne Museum, Bates College, and East Side House Settlement. Overall, the pattern is one of selective, institutional funding through flexible general support.
Disaster response is one of the clearest threads in the foundation’s giving. The American National Red Cross received $1,011,500 in 2024 and $961,500 in 2025 for general support, following a $857,000 general-support grant to American Red Cross in 2023. Youth development is another recurring area. Boys Club of New York Inc received $728,500 in 2025 and $278,500 in 2024, and Boys' Club of New York received $228,500 in 2023, all for general support. The foundation also supports education and research. United Negro College Fund received $300,000 in 2023, Bates College received $267,500 in 2023, and Weill Cornell Medicine received $275,000 in 2024 for general support. Health care appears as well through Memorial Sloan Kettering, which received $200,000 in 2024 and $200,000 in 2025.
Typical gifts cluster at a relatively high level, with p25 of $7,500, a median of $20,000, and p75 of $100,000, while recent awards often sit far above the median. The foundation’s recent record shows repeated grants to several recipients across multiple years, including the American National Red Cross, Boys Club of New York Inc, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and Goshen Historic Track. That suggests a relationship-based pattern rather than one-off project funding. The foundation is a regular funder, not a donor-advised fund, and it does not fund individuals or make program-related investments. The grants shown are primarily general support, which fits a flexible operating-support approach.
