Gideon Lodge #140 B'nai B'rith Housing Foundation focuses on supporting local social service and housing-related organizations in the Albany/Capital Region, with a clear emphasis on homelessness prevention, tenant advocacy, and food security. Grants are predominantly restricted program support and include repeated, multi-year funding to the same community organizations, including several Jewish communal agencies alongside interfaith and secular service providers. The foundation prioritizes frontline service delivery—shelters, food pantries, affordable housing and tenant services—targeting high‑need populations in the immediate geographic region.
A defining feature of Gideon Lodge #140 B'nai B'rith Housing Foundation Inc is the consistent use of restricted program grants to support housing stability and basic needs in the Albany/Capital Region. The largest recent grants sit at $25,000, and the foundation repeatedly backs organizations working on tenant advocacy, homelessness response, food access, and Jewish communal social services. In recent years, it has funded Albany Jewish Community Center, Capital Roots Inc, United Tenants of Albany Inc, and Jewish Community Center of Schenectady at the top end of its range. That pattern points to a funder that concentrates on local service delivery rather than broad, open-ended philanthropy. The grants also show a mix of secular, interfaith, and Jewish organizations, with support going to agencies serving people facing housing insecurity, food insecurity, and related social-service needs. Across the recent grants list, the same community partners reappear year after year, suggesting sustained relationships with frontline groups in Albany, Troy, Schenectady, and nearby Capital Region communities.
Housing and tenant services are a clear throughline. In 2025, the foundation gave $20,000 to Catholic Charities of Albany Housing Office for restricted program support, and in 2024 it gave $25,000 to United Tenants of Albany Inc for the same grant type. Homelessness services also appear prominently: Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless received $20,000 in 2024 and again in 2023, while Joseph's House and Shelter Inc received $20,000 in 2025, 2024, and 2023. Food security is another recurring area, with $22,500 to Food Pantries for the Capital District Inc in 2024 and $25,000 to Capital Roots Inc in 2024. The foundation also funds Jewish communal social services, including $20,000 to Jewish Family Services of Northeastern NY in 2025.
Typical awards cluster tightly around a few levels: p25 is $10,000, median is $20,000, and p75 is $20,000. That distribution matches the recent grants list, where many awards are exactly $20,000 and a smaller number reach $25,000. The pattern is recurring rather than one-off: several grantees appear in multiple years, including Joseph's House and Shelter Inc, Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless, United Tenants of Albany Inc, Capital Roots Inc, and Jewish Family Services of Northeastern NY. The foundation’s giving is program-restricted, and the overall portfolio is local in scope. It does not fund individuals and does not make program-related investments.
