Unleashing the collective potential within Appalachian Ohio by encouraging and supporting philanthropy.
Foundation for Appalachian Ohio channels philanthropy into a defined 32-county region, with grantmaking built around the five Pillars of Prosperity: arts and culture, community and economic development, education, environmental stewardship, and health and human services. A visible part of that work is support for collaborative and responsive funding, including a $820,756 grant to Vision to Learn for general support and a $319,244 grant to Focusing Philanthropy to support the Vision to Learn Ohio program. The foundation also funds place-based priorities through general support and mission support, such as a $400,000 grant to Ross County Board of Developmental Disabilities and a $250,000 grant to Havar Inc. Its portfolio includes scholarships, fellowships, competitive grants, and donor-established funds, giving it a mix of direct charitable support and regionwide capacity-building. Recent awards also show attention to community needs beyond the core pillars, including disaster relief, food access, and education-related programs. Across the grants listed here, the foundation’s pattern is to back organizations serving Appalachian Ohio communities and to use both unrestricted and program-specific grants to move work forward.
Education is a major thread in the foundation’s giving. It awarded $96,737 to Ohio Governor's Imagination Library in 2023 for general support, and $66,271 to Rolling Hills Local School District in Cambridge for general support. The scholarship side is formalized through a program that supports more than 320 scholarship funds and offers a general scholarship application for nearly 30 scholarships. Community food access also appears in the grant list: Athens County Food Pantry in Athens received $62,087 in 2025 for the mission of the pantry and $51,915 in 2024 for general support. Health-related and family-serving work shows up through grants such as $114,500 to Haven of Hope in Cambridge for mission support and $85,000 to the same organization in 2023 for general support. The foundation also funded disaster response with $170,012 to Community Foundation of Western North Carolina for Hurricane Helene relief efforts.
Typical grants are relatively modest: the 25th percentile is $7,340, the median is $10,616, and the 75th percentile is $22,747. The recent grants list also shows a long tail of larger awards, including several six-figure grants. The foundation gives repeatedly to some recipients across years: Haven of Hope appears in 2023, 2024, and 2025; Athens County Food Pantry appears in 2024 and 2025. That pattern suggests a mix of continuing support and one-time awards. Foundation for Appalachian Ohio operates donor-advised or donor-established funds alongside its own competitive programs, and several programs accept unsolicited applications, including the African American Community Fund Grants, Pillars of Prosperity Funds, the General Competitive Grants Program, the Competitive Grants Program, the Scholarship Program, and Donald R. Myers Legacy Fund Grants.
