About Edward J Mallinckrodt Jr Foundation
Edward J Mallinckrodt Jr Foundation’s recent grantmaking is defined by academic fellowships and scholar awards tied to biomedical research careers, especially at Washington University in St. Louis. Two $332,000 fellowship grants to Washington University in 2024 and 2025 show how central that institution is to the foundation’s portfolio. Alongside those fellowships, the foundation has backed early-career scholars at institutions including Harvard, Columbia, Rockefeller, and Baylor, suggesting a consistent preference for supporting investigators at the stage when projects are still moving toward independent funding. The foundation’s grants point to a narrow but coherent strategy: help graduate-level or physician-scientist talent build research momentum in university settings. Several recent awards are labeled Scholar Program or Scholar Award, and others support the Oliver Langenberg Physician-Scientist Training Program at Washington University. The result is a grantmaking profile centered on biomedical training, faculty development, and institutional research capacity rather than broad program funding across many sectors.
What Edward J Mallinckrodt Jr Foundation Funds
Biomedical research is the clearest theme in the foundation’s recent giving. It awarded $125,000 to Rockefeller for a Scholar Program grant to Dr. Victoria and the same amount to Memorial Sloan Cancer Center for Dr. Finley, both consistent with support for early-career scientific research. Physician-scientist development is another recurring area. Washington University received $100,000 for the Washington University for PSTP Diversity Initiative, linking the foundation to training support for physician-scientist pathways. The foundation also supports scholar awards at major research universities. Harvard received $100,000 for Dr. Klein, while UCLA received $100,000 for Dr. Hong, indicating a pattern of backing individual investigators within academic medicine. At Baylor, a $100,000 Scholar Program grant to Dr. Samuel shows the same emphasis on tenure-track research careers.
How Edward J Mallinckrodt Jr Foundation Gives
Typical grants cluster tightly around the middle of the range: p25 is $60,000, median is $75,000, and p75 is $100,000. The recent record also includes repeated awards at the same amounts, including $125,000 scholar grants and $100,000 scholar grants, which suggests a fairly standardized grantmaking structure. The foundation funds only U.S. recipients in the data provided, and the recent list shows multiple years of support for some recipients, including Washington University and several scholar grantees across 2023 to 2025. That pattern points to recurring relationships rather than one-time awards. The foundation also accepts unsolicited applications for its Mallinckrodt Grant Program.
