The Curtis Finlay Foundation appears to be a small, place-based funder focused on supporting local civic infrastructure in Brewton, AL. Its sole recorded grant is a sizeable, unrestricted award to the Brewton Public Library, suggesting a priority on sustaining community-facing institutions and general operating capacity rather than project-restricted funding.
Curtis Finlay Foundation Inc. stands out for repeated support of Brewton Public Library, including a $110,000 unrestricted grant in 2023 and a $15,000 unrestricted grant in 2024. That pattern points to a funder that backs core civic institutions rather than narrow projects. The foundation’s recent giving also reaches churches, schools, and local service organizations across Brewton and nearby Escambia County communities, with awards used for food pantry operations, school programs, maintenance needs, and general operating support. The grant record suggests a place-based foundation that works through familiar community anchors: libraries, churches, schools, and municipal organizations. In Brewton, it has funded the Brewton Area YMCA, United Fund of Brewton & East Brewton, Escambia County Al Drug Court, and Pollard-mccall Junior High School. It also supported Jay High School in Florida for band programming, showing that while the giving is local, it is not limited to one civic institution. The overall pattern is direct, practical support for organizations that serve residents in everyday settings.
Several cause areas appear in the foundation’s recent grants. For food security, Curtis Finlay Foundation Inc. gave $30,000 in 2024 to St Stephen's Episcopal Church for a community food pantry, and the same amount in 2023 for the same purpose. It also gave $30,000 in 2024 to First Methodist Church - Brewton for a community food pantry. Education-related support includes $75,000 to Alabama Wildlife Federation for Escambia schools educational field trips. In K-12 arts, the foundation awarded $20,000 to Tr Miller High School for band & choir programs and another $10,000 in 2023 for band program support at the same school. Community recreation appears as well: the City of Brewton received $20,000 for a pickle ball court. These grants sit alongside support for maintenance and unrestricted operating needs, showing a mix of program-specific and infrastructure-oriented giving.
Typical grant size is $5,000 at the 25th percentile, median, and 75th percentile, which signals a tightly clustered small-grant pattern even though a few awards are much larger. The recent record shows repeat funding to the same organizations across years, including St Stephen's Episcopal Church, Brewton Area YMCA, Jay High School, and the United Fund of Brewton & East Brewton. That suggests ongoing relationships rather than one-time awards. The foundation gives directly to nonprofits and also funds individuals, including named scholarship or education support grants. Its grantmaking is local and overwhelmingly in Alabama.
