The Coghill Family Foundation concentrates its giving on education access and advancement (from community college support to scholarship/college-readiness programs) and on medical research, particularly blood-cancer research. It also makes selective gifts to health services (including reproductive health), environmental conservation, and community senior services. Grants span local Chicago-area organizations as well as national and international universities and research nonprofits.
Coghill Family Foundation’s recent giving shows a strong split between education access and blood-cancer research. In 2025, the foundation gave $100,000 to the City Colleges of Chicago Foundation, its largest listed grant, and $53,000 to the Lymphoma Research Foundation. It also supported the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation with $50,000, signaling sustained attention to research tied to blood cancers. On the education side, the foundation backs college-readiness, scholarships, and higher-education pathways through groups such as Invest for Kids, College Possible Chicago, and university-based foundations. The grant list also shows selective support outside those core areas. The foundation gave to Planned Parenthood, The Nature Conservancy, Plymouth Place, and several schools and student-focused organizations. Recent recipients include Chicago-area institutions alongside universities and nonprofits in other states and the UK. The pattern suggests a family foundation with a relatively compact grant portfolio, giving at both larger anchor levels and a wider set of smaller awards. Its current file shows annual grants of $888,425 and total assets of $11,995,100.
Education is the clearest theme in the foundation’s recent grants. It gave $50,000 to Invest for Kids in 2025 and another $25,000 to College Possible Chicago, both tied to college access and student persistence. It also supported Nazareth Academy with $10,000 and the Chicago Children’s Museum with $10,000, extending the education theme into school and learning settings. Higher-education philanthropy appears in several grants to university-related organizations. The foundation awarded $36,000 to Texas Christian University, $25,000 to the University of Arizona Foundation, and $31,965 to London Business School. A separate $25,000 grant to Deming Centers & Entrepreneurship points to entrepreneurship education. Health and community support are also present. Planned Parenthood received $30,000 in 2025, while Plymouth Place received $37,500 for senior-living community assistance. Environmental giving appears through a $50,000 grant to The Nature Conservancy.
Typical grants sit in a mid-sized band: p25 is $5,000, the median is $10,000, and p75 is $20,000. That distribution fits a foundation that makes many smaller gifts while also reserving some larger anchor grants. The record shows repeat support across years for several organizations, including Invest for Kids, Lymphoma Research Foundation, Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, Nfte, Bernie's Books, Hinsdale Covenant Church, and Plymouth Place, which points to recurring relationships rather than one-time awards. The foundation is a family foundation, not an individual-giving vehicle, and it does not make program-related investments. The grants file does not indicate an application process.
