The Charles V Roven Family Foundation concentrates its giving on film and cinematic institutions and on Jewish/Israel-focused education and humanitarian causes. A majority of dollars flow to a single major cultural project—the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures—while recurring gifts support Bar‑Ilan University and smaller film organizations; there is also targeted humanitarian support for Israel. Grants are purposeful (planning, development, general operating) rather than widely distributed small donations.
The Charles V Roven Family Foundation’s most distinctive recent pattern is its repeated support for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, including four grants of $125,000 across 2023, 2024, and 2025 for planning, development, operations, design, construction, and general fund work. That sustained commitment signals a funder that favors major cultural institutions and multi-year relationship giving rather than a broad scatter of small awards. The foundation also backs Jewish higher education and Israel-related humanitarian work, with recurring support for American Friends of Bar-Ilan University and grants to ISRAAID US Global Humanitarian. Other recent awards show a related circle of priorities: film preservation and presentation, Holocaust education, and assistance tied to the motion picture community. Grants to American Cinematheque, Holocaust Museum LA, and MPTF Motion Picture & Television Fund fit that pattern. The giving mix includes operating support, general funds, and purpose-specific project gifts, suggesting the foundation often chooses established institutions and targeted needs over open-ended program portfolios. Across the recent grants list, the same organizations appear more than once, which points to continuity in the foundation’s approach to favored partners.
Film and motion picture institutions are a central theme. The foundation gave $51,000 in 2025 to American Cinematheque for a general fund project, and it also supported the MPTF Motion Picture & Television Fund with $34,300 in 2025 for the Country House Fund. Those awards sit alongside museum and preservation-oriented giving. Jewish education and Israel-focused work form another clear lane. In 2024, it gave $25,000 to Yeshiva University for general support, and it awarded $25,000 to Jewish National Fund in the same year. The foundation also supported humanitarian relief through $50,000 to ISRAAID US Global Humanitarian in 2024. The recent grants list also includes broader community-serving causes. Examples include $15,000 to LA Family Housing in 2023, $15,000 to SOS Children’s Villages California Inc in 2024, and $10,000 to Feeding America in 2023.
Typical grant size centers on mid-five-figure gifts: p25 is $6,250, median is $10,000, and p75 is $15,000. The foundation’s recent behavior also shows repeated awards to the same recipients across multiple years, especially in film and Jewish-focused institutions, which suggests ongoing relationships rather than one-time project grants. The structure of the gifts is mostly general fund, general operating, or purpose-specific project support, with occasional capital or campaign funding. It does fund individuals, but the recent grants list here is composed of institutional awards.
