This foundation is a targeted funder of Jewish-affiliated elder and senior care programs in the Carolinas, consistently directing substantial grants to Jewish Family Service organizations and local Jewish Federations. Its giving is mission-focused on supporting services for older adults — care, case management, and program support — delivered through established Jewish communal institutions rather than direct service startups. The foundation favors regional impact, concentrating funding in Greensboro, Raleigh/Cary, and nearby Carolina and Charleston communities.
Concentrated regional giving with repeated, relatively large grants to a small set of recurring Jewish communal organizations (multiple multi-thousand-dollar grants to Jewish Family Services and local Federations).
A designated annual grant in memory of Al Herman anchors Bjh Foundation for Senior Services Carolina Foundation for Jewish Seniors’ work: food relief for Jewish individuals in need sits alongside a broader portfolio of elder and senior care funding in the Carolinas. The foundation’s recent grants repeatedly support Jewish communal organizations that deliver services to older adults, especially Jewish Family Service agencies and Jewish Federations. In 2025, it gave $70,000 to Jewish Family Services of Greater Charleston for elder and senior care services and $65,000 to Raleigh-cary Jewish Family Svcs of the Jewish Federation of Raleigh-cary for the same purpose, showing the scale of its support for established local providers. Other sizable awards reached Jewish Family Services of Wnc, Jewish Family Services of Greensboro, and Jewish for Good, all for services tied to seniors. The foundation also makes designated grants through named annual programs, including the Al Herman award and the Audrey and Jerome Madans Award for Charlotte-area organizations. Its grant pattern points to sustained support for Jewish seniors, with direct service, case management, respite, and community-based senior programming delivered through regional institutions.
A central theme is direct support for Jewish seniors through community institutions. The foundation awarded $80,000 to Jewish Federation of Raleigh-cary for elder and senior care services and $55,000 to Jewish Family Services of Greensboro for the same purpose, reinforcing its reliance on Jewish Federation and Jewish Family Service partners. It also funds elder-care infrastructure in specific communities: Temple B'nai Sholem in New Bern received $15,000 for elder and senior care services, while the Sandra and Leon Levine JCC in Charlotte received $13,000 for the same type of work in 2025. Another recurring cause area is support for suburban and regional senior programming, including $50,000 to Jewish for Good in Durham for elder and senior care services. Across these grants, the emphasis is on services for older Jewish adults rather than unrelated program areas.
