The Zubrow Foundation concentrates its giving in a small number of sizable awards, with the majority of funds directed to higher education—specifically Cornell University—while also supporting a mix of local/recreational causes and international women’s economic empowerment. Grants are few but large, suggesting targeted philanthropic interests (likely donor ties to Cornell and to Nantucket) rather than broad community funding.
Highly concentrated: a small portfolio of large grants, including repeat funding to a flagship institution (Cornell). Limited diversification across sectors — most dollars go to one or two primary recipients, with occasional single grants to other causes.
The Barry L and Jan R Zubrow Foundation makes a small number of large general-support grants, and its two biggest recent awards both went to Cornell University: $602,000 in 2023 and $600,000 in 2024. That pattern points to a funder with a strong higher-education priority, while other grants show interest in women’s economic empowerment, cultural institutions, and selected civic organizations. The foundation’s recent activity also includes support for the Nantucket Golf Club Foundation, Women for Women International, the Council of Foreign Relations, and New Leaders, all given as general support. The grant list suggests flexible funding is a consistent approach. Several recipients appear in more than one year, including Cornell University, Women for Women International, New Leaders, the Council of Foreign Relations, Metropolitan Opera Guild Inc, Harvard Business School, Nantucket Golf Club Foundation, and Jewish Federation of Palm Beach. That repeat pattern, combined with grant sizes that often sit at $10,000, $25,000, or higher, shows a foundation that favors ongoing relationships and unrestricted support rather than one-off project grants.
Higher education is the clearest theme in the Barry L and Jan R Zubrow Foundation’s recent grants. Cornell University received $602,000 in 2023 and $600,000 in 2024 for general support, and the foundation also gave $25,000 to the University of Chicago Business School in 2024 and $10,000 to the University of Chicago Law School in 2024. The foundation also backs women’s economic empowerment. Women for Women International received $100,000 in 2023, $50,000 in 2024, and another $5,000 in 2023, all as general support. In cultural and civic giving, grants include $10,000 to the Metropolitan Opera Guild Inc in both 2023 and 2024, $10,000 to The Society of the Four Arts in 2024, and $5,000 to the Norton Museum in 2024. That mix shows support for arts organizations alongside education and international development.
Typical grants are modest relative to the foundation’s largest awards: the 25th percentile is $1,654, the median is $5,000, and the 75th percentile is $10,000. The distribution is therefore concentrated in smaller awards, even though the foundation occasionally makes very large gifts. The grant list also shows recurring support across years to several organizations, indicating an ongoing relationship model rather than isolated grants. The foundation is a private foundation, does not fund individuals, and does not make program-related investments. Grants in the recent record are listed as general support, consistent with flexible funding.
