The Andrew & Julie Klingenstein Family Fund appears to make a small number of very large gifts focused on education, healthcare institutions, and civic information. Grants are directed primarily to universities, major hospital systems, and organizations working on K–12 policy and journalism, suggesting an interest in strengthening education outcomes, medical capacity, and quality news/analysis in the Mid‑Atlantic/greater DC region. A substantial portion of total giving is concentrated in a few multi‑hundred‑thousand to multi‑million dollar awards, including at least one large pass‑through or multi‑award line item ("See schedule attached").
Concentrated, high-dollar grants to a small set of institutional grantees with some repeat or multi‑award line items; mix of direct grants to operating institutions and use of donor-advised/pass-through vehicles.
A pair of seven-figure pass-through grants anchors Andrew & Julie Klingenstein Family Fund Inc.'s recent giving: two 2023 and 2024 awards listed only as "See Schedule Attached" in New York, each above $2.2 million. That pattern points to a funder that makes a small number of very large commitments rather than many smaller ones. In the latest filing year, the fund continued that approach with major support for universities, hospital systems, journalism infrastructure, and DC-area education organizations. The largest named award went to the University of Maryland in College Park for education, while equally large grants went to MedStar, Children's National Hospital Foundation, and the Lenfest Institute. Their grantmaking also reaches community and policy organizations tied to education and civic life in Washington, DC, along with health-related groups in Maryland and New York. The mix of recipients suggests a portfolio built around higher education, medical capacity, K-12 education, and information access. A separate environmental grant to 7 Lakes Alliance shows the fund is not limited to those core areas, but the overall pattern remains tightly focused on institutions and infrastructure rather than individuals.
In higher education, Andrew & Julie Klingenstein Family Fund Inc. gave $751,151 to the University of Maryland for education. In health, it made matching $726,978 grants to MedStar and Children's National Hospital Foundation, and also supported Mercy Hospital, Sibley Memorial Hospitaljhu, and The Children's Law Center. Education policy and early learning appear as another clear theme. The fund gave $290,972 to Education Forward DC and $174,628 to Educare DC Foundation, both in Washington, DC, signaling interest in school improvement and educational access in that region. Civic information and local media are also present: Lenfest Institute received $726,978 for general purpose support, and Tiny News Collective received $98,723 for general purpose support. Those grants sit alongside general-purpose support for Wise Center in New York and community support for Bridges Across the River and Community of Hope.
The fund's recent grants are tightly clustered in size. The typical award is just over $2.29 million at the 25th percentile, median, and 75th percentile, showing very little spread among the largest reported gifts. That top-heavy pattern is reinforced by two pass-through line items in 2023 and 2024, each above $2.2 million. Grantmaking appears institutional and recurring rather than one-off: the fund gives through operating-style support, general purpose support, and attachment-specified awards, and it supports a mix of universities, hospitals, education nonprofits, and civic organizations. It does not fund individuals and does not make program-related investments. The available data do not show an application process, suggesting grants are likely initiated by the funder rather than through open solicitation.
